For unto us a child is born (2/4)

This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. We know what real love is because Jesus gave up his life for us. So we also ought to give up our lives for our brothers and sisters.
For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.
Not to us, Lord, not to us but to your name be the glory, because of your love and faithfulness. Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name goes all the glory for your unfailing love and faithfulness.
He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won’t he also give us everything else?
For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever!
Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.Before the mountains were born, before you gave birth to the earth and the world, from beginning to end, you are God.
For the Lord your God is gracious and compassionate. He will not turn his face from you if you return to him.For the Lord your God is gracious and merciful. If you return to him, he will not continue to turn his face from you.
Know then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so the Lord your God disciplines you.Think about it: Just as a parent disciplines a child, the Lord your God disciplines you for your own good.
This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. This is how Jesus the Messiah was born. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. But before the marriage took place, while she was still a virgin, she became pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit.
He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time. For God saved us and called us to live a holy life. He did this, not because we deserved it, but because that was his plan from before the beginning of time—to show us his grace through Christ Jesus.
My son, if your heart is wise, then my heart will be glad indeed. My child, if your heart is wise, my own heart will rejoice!
But in your great mercy you did not put an end to them or abandon them, for you are a gracious and merciful God.But in your great mercy, you did not destroy them completely or abandon them forever. What a gracious and merciful God you are!
For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil. The eyes of the Lord watch over those who do right, and his ears are open to their prayers. But the Lord turns his face against those who do evil.
But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!)
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.
His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence.
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is by his great mercy that we have been born again, because God raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Now we live with great expectation.
For great is your love, reaching to the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the skies. For your unfailing love is as high as the heavens. Your faithfulness reaches to the clouds.
As you do not know the path of the wind, or how the body is formed in a mother’s womb, so you cannot understand the work of God, the Maker of all things.Just as you cannot understand the path of the wind or the mystery of a tiny baby growing in its mother’s womb, so you cannot understand the activity of God, who does all things.
All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).All of this occurred to fulfill the Lord’s message through his prophet: “Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel, which means ‘God is with us.’”
Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel. All right then, the Lord himself will give you the sign. Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel (which means ‘God is with us’).
Listen, my son, accept what I say, and the years of your life will be many.My child, listen to me and do as I say, and you will have a long, good life.
For the Lord is our judge, the Lord is our lawgiver, the Lord is our king; it is he who will save us.For the Lord is our judge, our lawgiver, and our king. He will care for us and save us.
What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us?
Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity.“Don’t tear your clothing in your grief, but tear your hearts instead.” Return to the Lord your God, for he is merciful and compassionate, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. He is eager to relent and not punish.

Who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.He gave his life to free us from every kind of sin, to cleanse us, and to make us his very own people, totally committed to doing good deeds.
