Do not make gods from silver or from gold instead of me. You will not make them for yourselves. | You shall not make other gods besides Me; gods of silver or gods of gold, you shall not make for yourselves. |
He continued, “Then put away the foreign gods from among you. Bend your heart to the Lord, the God of Israel.” | Now then, do away with the foreign gods which are in your midst, and incline your hearts to the Lord, the God of Israel. |

If it seems wrong to you to serve the Lord, then today you must choose whom you will serve, whether it be the gods that your fathers served on the other side of the river, or the gods of the Amorites who dwell in the land. As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord. | But if it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served, which were beyond the Euphrates River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. |
Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. | The one who does not love does not know God, because God is love. |
Love cannot result in any harm to the neighbor; therefore, love is the fulfillment of the Law. | Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the Law. |
We have come to know and to believe in the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God in him. | We have come to know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and the one who remains in love remains in God, and God remains in him. |
Do not love the world or what is in the world. If anyone does love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. | Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. |
Therefore, we love because he first loved us. | We love, because He first loved us. |
If you love me, you will keep my commandments. | If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. |
In love there is no fear; indeed, perfect love casts out fear, because fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not yet achieved perfection in love. | There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love. |
However, if you truly amend your ways and your deeds, if you are upright in your dealings with your neighbor; if you do not oppress the alien, the orphan, and the widow; if you do not shed innocent blood in this place; and if you do not follow other gods and thereby cause your own destruction, then I will allow you to live in this place, in the land that I gave as a permanent gift to your fathers long ago. | For if you truly amend your ways and your deeds, if you truly practice justice between a person and his neighbor, if you do not oppress the stranger, the orphan, or the widow, and do not shed innocent blood in this place, nor follow other gods to your own ruin, then I will let you live in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers forever and ever. |
May mercy, peace, and love be granted you in abundance. | May mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you. |
Thus there are three things that endure: faith, hope, and love, and the greatest of these is love. | But now faith, hope, and love remain, these three; but the greatest of these is love. |
No one has ever seen God, but if we love one another, God abides in us, and his love is made complete in us. | No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God remains in us, and His love is perfected in us. |
Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God. Everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. | Beloved, let’s love one another; for love is from God, and everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. |
I give you a new commandment: love one another. Just as I have loved you, so you should also love one another. | I am giving you a new commandment, that you love one another; just as I have loved you, that you also love one another. |
Above all, maintain the fervor of your love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins. | Above all, keep fervent in your love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins. |
Everything that you do should be done in love. | All that you do must be done in love. |
If someone says, “I love God,” but at the same time hates his brother, he is a liar. For whoever does not love the brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. | If someone says, “I love God,” and yet he hates his brother or sister, he is a liar; for the one who does not love his brother and sister whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen. |
If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and remain in his love. | If you keep My commandments, you will remain in My love; just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and remain in His love. |
Hatred stirs up strife, but love overlooks all offenses. | Hatred stirs up strife, But love covers all offenses. |
Beloved, since God loved us so much, we should love one another. | Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. |
This is my commandment: love one another as I have loved you. | This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you. |
The second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ | The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ |
Let your love be sincere. Loathe what is evil and hold fast to what is good. | Love must be free of hypocrisy. Detest what is evil; cling to what is good. |
