Bible Verses about Pride

  • When pride is nurtured, disgrace soon follows,
but wisdom is the hallmark of the humble.
  • The fear of the Lord implies hatred of evil;
    I hate pride and arrogance,
    evil ways and perverse speech.
  • Live in harmony with one another. Do not consider yourself to be better than others, but associate with the lowly, and never be conceited.
  • A man’s pride will bring him low,
but lowly souls will rise to honor.
  • If anyone would boast, let him boast in the Lord. For it is not the one who commends himself who is really approved, but the one whom the Lord commends.
  • But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or how tall he stands, for the Lord has rejected him. He does not see the way that men see, for men look on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
  • A man is haughty until disaster overtakes him,
    but humility comes before honors.
  • Then he went on, “It is what comes out of a person that defiles. For from within, from the human heart, come evil thoughts, unchastity, theft, murder, adultery, avarice, malice, deceit, indecency, envy, slander, arrogance, and folly. All these evils come from within, and they defile a person.”
  • For everything that is in the world—
    the concupiscence of the flesh,
    the concupiscence of the eyes,
    and the pride of life—
    comes not from the Father
    but from the world.
  • God chose those in the world who were lowly and despised, those who count for nothing, to reduce to nothing those who were regarded as worthy, so that no one could boast in the presence of God.
  • Therefore, now I, Nebuchadnezzar,
    praise and exalt and glorify
    the King of heaven.
For all of his works are right,
and all of his ways are just.
Also, he is able to humble
all those who follow the path of pride.
  • The brother who is in modest circumstances should take pride in being raised up. Likewise, the one who is rich should glory in being brought low, for he will disappear like a flower of the field.
  • Instruct those who are rich in this world’s goods that they should not be proud, nor should they trust in the uncertainty of riches but rather in God who richly provides us with everything we need for our enjoyment.
  • If I give away everything to feed the poor
and hand over my body to be burned,
    but do not have love,
    I achieve nothing.
  • When I fed them, they were satisfied;
when they were satisfied, they became proud of heart
    and quickly forgot me.

Jesus replied,
“Amen, amen, I say to you,
no one can see the kingdom of God
without being born from above.”
