He was going on the Sabbath day through the grain fields; and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of grain. The Pharisees said to him, “Behold, why do they do that which is not lawful on the Sabbath day?” He said to them, “Did you never read what David did when he had need and was hungry—he, and those who were with him? How he entered into God’s house at the time of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the show bread, which is not lawful to eat except for the priests, and gave also to those who were with him?” He said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. Therefore the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath.” | One day, as Jesus was passing through a field of grain on the Sabbath, his disciples began to pick some heads of grain as they walked along. The Pharisees said to him, “Behold, why are your disciples doing what is forbidden on the Sabbath?” He answered, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need of food? He entered the house of God when Abiathar was high priest and ate the sacred bread that only the priests were permitted to eat, and he shared it with his companions.” Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. That is why the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.” |
Even so, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner repenting. | In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing among the angels of God over one sinner who repents. |

But be doers of the word, and not only hearers, deluding your own selves. | Be doers of the word and not just hearers who only deceive themselves. |
Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. | Put on the armor of God so that you will be able to stand firm against the deceit of the devil. |
What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? May it never be! | What then? Should we sin because we are not under the Law but under grace? Of course not! |
When he has come, he will convict the world about sin, about righteousness, and about judgment. | And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment. |
As for God, his way is perfect. Yahweh’s word is tried. He is a shield to all those who take refuge in him. | The way of God is blameless, and the Lord’s promise proves true; he is a shield to all who flee to him for safety. |
As for God, his way is perfect. Yahweh’s word is tested. He is a shield to all those who take refuge in him. | The way of God is blameless; the Lord’s promise has proved true. He is a shield to all who take refuge in him. |
Oh the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and the knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past tracing out! | Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How inscrutable are his judgments and how unfathomable his ways! |
For you need endurance so that, having done the will of God, you may receive the promise. | You need to be steadfast if you want to do the will of God and receive what he has promised. |
So then the Lord, after he had spoken to them, was received up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. | Then, after he had spoken to them, the Lord Jesus was taken up into heaven, and there he took his place at the right hand of God. |
For sin will not have dominion over you, for you are not under law, but under grace. | For sin is no longer to have any power over you, since you are not under the Law but under grace. |
Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by his good conduct that his deeds are done in gentleness of wisdom. | Who among you is wise and understanding? Prove by your good life that your works are done with the humility that comes from wisdom. |
But the Scripture imprisoned all things under sin, that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. | But according to Scripture all things have been confined under sin, so that through faith in Jesus Christ what was promised might be given to those who believe. |
But to us, God revealed them through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. | However, God has revealed these things to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit explores everything, even the depths of God. |
Being therefore justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. | Therefore, now that we have been justified by faith, we are at peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. |
For most certainly, I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not even one smallest letter or one tiny pen stroke shall in any way pass away from the law, until all things are accomplished. | Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not a single letter, not even a tiny portion of a letter, will disappear from the Law until all things have been accomplished. |
Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law. | Owe nothing to anyone except the debt of love you owe one another. The one who loves others has fulfilled the Law. |
You are alienated from Christ, you who desire to be justified by the law. You have fallen away from grace. | Those of you who seek to be justified by the Law have cut yourselves off from Christ and have fallen away from grace. |
Therefore put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. | Therefore, put on the armor of God, so that you will be able to hold fast on the evil day and to hold your ground with all your strength. |
Let no one deceive you in any way. For it will not be unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of destruction. He opposes and exalts himself against all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, setting himself up as God. | Let no one deceive you in any way. That Day cannot come before the final rebellion occurs and the lawless one is revealed, the son of destruction. He is the adversary who sets himself in opposition to, and exalts himself above, every so-called god or object of worship, and who even seats himself in the temple of God, declaring himself to be God. |
But he knows the way that I take. When he has tried me, I will come out like gold. My foot has held fast to his steps. I have kept his way, and not turned away. | And yet he is aware of everywhere I go; if he were to test me, I would emerge like pure gold. My footsteps have not strayed from the path he established; I have followed his way and never turned aside. |
For you didn’t receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” | For you did not receive a spirit of slavery leading to fear; rather, you received the Spirit of adoption, enabling us to cry out, “Abba! Father!” |
For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that through perseverance and through encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. | For everything that was written in the past was written for our instruction, so that by perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures, we may continue to have hope. |
Don’t grieve the Holy Spirit of God, in whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. | And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God who has marked you with his seal for the day of redemption. |
