You might say to yourself, “How can we know that the Lord did not speak the message?” If what the prophet proclaims in the name of the Lord is not true and it does not happen, then the message was not proclaimed by the Lord. The prophet has spoken presumptuously, you should not fear him. | You may say to yourselves, “How can we know when a message has not been spoken by the Lord?” If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the Lord does not take place or come true, that is a message the Lord has not spoken. That prophet has spoken presumptuously, so do not be alarmed. |
Do not love the world or what is in the world. If anyone does love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. | Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. |

I was eager to respond to those who did not consult me. I was anxious to be approached by those who did not seek me. I said, “Here I am! Here I am!” to a nation that did not summon me. | I revealed myself to those who did not ask for me; I was found by those who did not seek me. To a nation that did not call on my name, I said, ‘Here am I, here am I.’ |
Do not be afraid or dismayed, the Lord will go before you; he will not fail or forsake you. | The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. |
I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance. | I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. |
Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled; be not afraid. | Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. |
Do not be deceived; God cannot be mocked. A person will reap only what he sows. | Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. |
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; nor will the waters engulf you. When you walk through fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not consume you. | When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. |
I will make haste and not delay to observe your precepts. | I will hasten and not delay to obey your commands. |
Let us never grow weary in doing what is right, for if we do not give up, we will reap our harvest in due time. | Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. |
A truthful witness does not lie, but a false witness lies incessantly. | An honest witness does not deceive, but a false witness pours out lies. |
“All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are beneficial. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not allow myself to be dominated by anything. | “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but I will not be mastered by anything. |
Fix your thoughts on things that are above, not on things that are on the earth. | Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. |
But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions. | But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins. |
Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill them. | Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. |
As long as the goodwill is present, the gift will be acceptable according to what one has, not according to what one does not have. | For if the willingness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what one does not have. |
For sin is no longer to have any power over you, since you are not under the Law but under grace. | For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace. |
Jesus answered them, “My teaching is not my own; rather, it comes from him who sent me.” | Jesus answered, “My teaching is not my own. It comes from the one who sent me.” |
Return, rebel Israel, says the Lord. I will not look upon you in anger. For I am merciful, says the Lord; my wrath will not continue forever. | ‘Return, faithless Israel,’ declares the Lord, ‘I will frown on you no longer, for I am faithful,’ declares the Lord, ‘I will not be angry forever.’ |
Those who place their hope in the Lord will regain their strength. They will soar as with eagles’ wings, they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not become faint. | But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. |
Arise, O Lord! Lift up your hand, O God! Do not forget the afflicted. | Arise, Lord! Lift up your hand, O God. Do not forget the helpless. |
For it is by grace that you have been saved through faith. This has not come from you but from the gift of God. It does not come from works, so that no one can boast. | For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast. |
You want something that you cannot have, so you commit murder. And you covet something but cannot obtain it, so you engage in quarrels and fights. You do not have because you do not ask. | You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. |
For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the Lord. | “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. |
Dear children, let us love not in word or speech but in deed and truth. | Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth. |
