For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it. | For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the sake of the gospel will save it. |
And this commandment we have from Him: that he who loves God must love his brother also. | This is the commandment we have received from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother. |
|
He who keeps the commandment keeps his soul, But he who is careless of his ways will die. | Whoever observes the commandments will live, but the one who scorns them will die. |
For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? | What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his very life? Or what can he give in exchange for his life? |
Even a fool is counted wise when he holds his peace; When he shuts his lips, he is considered perceptive. | Even a fool who keeps silent is considered wise; if he closes his lips, he is regarded as intelligent. |
He will again have compassion on us, And will subdue our iniquities. You will cast all our sins Into the depths of the sea. | You will again show us compassion and wash away our guilt; you will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea. |
Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him; Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, Because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass. | Wait quietly for the Lord and be patient until he comes. Do not fret over the man who prospers because of his evil schemes. |
A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back. | A fool gives free rein to his anger, but a wise man bides his time and calms it. |
But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. | And whoever does not provide for relatives, especially for those who are living with him, has disowned the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. |
A fool’s wrath is known at once, But a prudent man covers shame. | A fool is quick to show his anger, but a prudent man ignores an insult. |
Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. | Those who accepted his message were baptized, and on that day about three thousand people were added to their number. |
Many shall be purified, made white, and refined, but the wicked shall do wickedly; and none of the wicked shall understand, but the wise shall understand. | Many shall be purified, cleansed, and refined, but the wicked will persist in their evil ways. |
And so it was, because the midwives feared God, that He provided households for them. | God gave the midwives numerous families because they had feared God. |
For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? | What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his very life? |
For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died; and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again. | For the love of Christ urges us forward, once we conclude that one has died for all, and therefore all have died. And he died for all, so that those who live might no longer live for themselves, but for him who for their sakes died and was raised to life. |
As for every man to whom God has given riches and wealth, and given him power to eat of it, to receive his heritage and rejoice in his labor—this is the gift of God. | Moreover, the one to whom God grants wealth and possessions and the ability to enjoy them and to find contentment in his toil receives a gift from God. |
You will keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on You, Because he trusts in You. | O Lord, you grant peace to those who are steadfast because of their trust in you. |
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled. | Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for justice, for they will have their fill. |
A fool has no delight in understanding, But in expressing his own heart. | A fool takes no pleasure in understanding but only delights in expressing his own opinions. |
For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them. | For where two or three are gathered together in my name, I am there in their midst. |
The words of a wise man’s mouth are gracious, But the lips of a fool shall swallow him up. | The words of a wise man win favor, but a fool’s tongue is his undoing. |
Now the multitude of those who believed were of one heart and one soul; neither did anyone say that any of the things he possessed was his own, but they had all things in common. | The entire community of believers was united in heart and soul. No one claimed any of his possessions as his own, for everything was held in common. |
Then the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations and to reserve the unjust under punishment for the day of judgment. | Therefore, the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from their trials and to hold the wicked for punishment until the Day of Judgment. |
The ransom of a man’s life is his riches, But the poor does not hear rebuke. | A wealthy man pays a ransom to save his life; a poor man never has to worry about such threats. |
Do not envy the oppressor, And choose none of his ways; For the perverse person is an abomination to the Lord, But His secret counsel is with the upright. | Do not envy a violent man or choose to emulate any of his ways. For the perverse man is an abomination to the Lord whose friendship is bestowed only upon the upright. |
