Whatever (3/4)

Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on. The life is more than meat, and the body is more than raiment. That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food to eat or enough clothes to wear. For life is more than food, and your body more than clothing.
Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?Don’t team up with those who are unbelievers. How can righteousness be a partner with wickedness? How can light live with darkness?
What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us?
The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints.I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the confident hope he has given to those he called—his holy people who are his rich and glorious inheritance.
What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? What are mere mortals that you should think about them, human beings that you should care for them?
What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.Well then, since God’s grace has set us free from the law, does that mean we can go on sinning? Of course not!
For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul?
So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.So we can say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper, so I will have no fear. What can mere people do to me?”
In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me.I praise God for what he has promised. I trust in God, so why should I be afraid? What can mere mortals do to me?
And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also do even the same. And if you do good only to those who do good to you, why should you get credit? Even sinners do that much!
The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable: but the mouth of the wicked speaketh frowardness. The lips of the godly speak helpful words, but the mouth of the wicked speaks perverse words.
But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.
He revealeth the deep and secret things: he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him.He reveals deep and mysterious things and knows what lies hidden in darkness, though he is surrounded by light.
Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.” And the soldiers gambled for his clothes by throwing dice.
Say not thou, What is the cause that the former days were better than these? for thou dost not enquire wisely concerning this.Don’t long for “the good old days.” This is not wise.
What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?Well then, should we keep on sinning so that God can show us more and more of his wonderful grace? Of course not! Since we have died to sin, how can we continue to live in it?
But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. Then he added, “Now go and learn the meaning of this Scripture: ‘I want you to show mercy, not offer sacrifices.’ For I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.”
To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. For God wanted them to know that the riches and glory of Christ are for you Gentiles, too. And this is the secret: Christ lives in you. This gives you assurance of sharing his glory.
Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.
And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will.
When goods increase, they are increased that eat them: and what good is there to the owners thereof, saving the beholding of them with their eyes? The more you have, the more people come to help you spend it. So what good is wealth—except perhaps to watch it slip through your fingers!
For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.No one can know a person’s thoughts except that person’s own spirit, and no one can know God’s thoughts except God’s own Spirit.
What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.Well then, am I suggesting that the law of God is sinful? Of course not! In fact, it was the law that showed me my sin. I would never have known that coveting is wrong if the law had not said, “You must not covet.”
Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are! But the people who belong to this world don’t recognize that we are God’s children because they don’t know him.
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.
