Incline my heart unto thy testimonies, and not to covetousness. | Give me an eagerness for your laws rather than a love for money! |
And I will walk at liberty: for I seek thy precepts. | I will walk in freedom, for I have devoted myself to your commandments. |
|
I made haste, and delayed not to keep thy commandments. | I will hurry, without delay, to obey your commands. |
I will never forget thy precepts: for with them thou hast quickened me. | I will never forget your commandments, for by them you give me life. |
Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. | Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path. |
Thy testimonies have I taken as an heritage for ever: for they are the rejoicing of my heart. | Your laws are my treasure; they are my heart’s delight. |
Thou art my hiding place and my shield: I hope in thy word. | You are my refuge and my shield; your word is my source of hope. |
The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple. | The teaching of your word gives light, so even the simple can understand. |
Order my steps in thy word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me. | Guide my steps by your word, so I will not be overcome by evil. |
Thy word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for ever. | The very essence of your words is truth; all your just regulations will stand forever. |
Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them. | Those who love your instructions have great peace and do not stumble. |
Deliver my soul, O Lord, from lying lips, and from a deceitful tongue. | Rescue me, O Lord, from liars and from all deceitful people. |
I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth. | I look up to the mountains— does my help come from there? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth! |
He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. | He will not let you stumble; the one who watches over you will not slumber. |
The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore. | The Lord keeps you from all harm and watches over your life. The Lord keeps watch over you as you come and go, both now and forever. |
Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth. | Our help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. |
Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain. | Unless the Lord builds a house, the work of the builders is wasted. Unless the Lord protects a city, guarding it with sentries will do no good. |
Blessed is every one that feareth the Lord; that walketh in his ways. | How joyful are those who fear the Lord— all who follow his ways! |
Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O Lord. Lord, hear my voice: let thine ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications. | From the depths of despair, O Lord, I call for your help. Hear my cry, O Lord. Pay attention to my prayer. |
I wait for the Lord, my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope. | I am counting on the Lord; yes, I am counting on him. I have put my hope in his word. |
Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! | How wonderful and pleasant it is when brothers live together in harmony! |
The Lord will perfect that which concerneth me: thy mercy, O Lord, endureth for ever: forsake not the works of thine own hands. | The Lord will work out his plans for my life— for your faithful love, O Lord, endures forever. Don’t abandon me, for you made me. |
O Lord, thou hast searched me, and known me. Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off. | O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I’m far away. |
For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O Lord, thou knowest it altogether. | You know what I am going to say even before I say it, Lord. |
Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. | I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence! If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the grave, you are there. |
