Bible Verses about Desires
I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. | Live by the Spirit, I say, and do not gratify the desires of the flesh. |
Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. | Put to death, therefore, whatever in you is earthly: fornication, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed (which is idolatry). |
You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask. | You want something and do not have it; so you commit murder. And you covet something and cannot obtain it; so you engage in disputes and conflicts. You do not have, because you do not ask. |
And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever. | And the world and its desire are passing away, but those who do the will of God live forever. |
Can one walk on hot coals, And his feet not be seared? | Or can one walk on hot coals without scorching the feet? |
Nevertheless, because of sexual immorality, let each man have his own wife, and let each woman have her own husband. | But because of cases of sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband. |
All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any. | “All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are beneficial. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be dominated by anything. |
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. | For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. |
I have made a covenant with my eyes; Why then should I look upon a young woman? | I have made a covenant with my eyes; how then could I look upon a virgin? |
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. | Discipline yourselves, keep alert. Like a roaring lion your adversary the devil prowls around, looking for someone to devour. |
For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. | For all that is in the world—the desire of the flesh, the desire of the eyes, the pride in riches—comes not from the Father but from the world. |
Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge. | Let marriage be held in honor by all, and let the marriage bed be kept undefiled; for God will judge fornicators and adulterers. |
For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. | For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for self-indulgence, but through love become slaves to one another. |
As the deer pants for the water brooks, So pants my soul for You, O God. | As a deer longs for flowing streams, so my soul longs for you, O God. |
Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. | Stay awake and pray that you may not come into the time of trial; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. |
No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it. | No testing has overtaken you that is not common to everyone. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tested beyond your strength, but with the testing he will also provide the way out so that you may be able to endure it. |
Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. | No one, when tempted, should say, “I am being tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil and he himself tempts no one. |
Yes, in the way of Your judgments, O Lord, we have waited for You; The desire of our soul is for Your name And for the remembrance of You. | In the path of your judgments, O Lord, we wait for you; your name and your renown are the soul's desire. |
By which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. | Thus he has given us, through these things, his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may escape from the corruption that is in the world because of lust, and may become participants of the divine nature. |
For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. | For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and in their eagerness to be rich some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pains. |
Will you set your eyes on that which is not? For riches certainly make themselves wings; They fly away like an eagle toward heaven. | When your eyes light upon it, it is gone; for suddenly it takes wings to itself, flying like an eagle toward heaven. |
He covets greedily all day long, But the righteous gives and does not spare. | All day long the wicked covet, but the righteous give and do not hold back. |
What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! On the contrary, I would not have known sin except through the law. For I would not have known covetousness unless the law had said, “You shall not covet.” | What then should we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet, if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.” |
Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted. | My friends, if anyone is detected in a transgression, you who have received the Spirit should restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness. Take care that you yourselves are not tempted. |
So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God. | And those who are in the flesh cannot please God. |
