If anyone is rich in worldly possessions and sees a brother in need but refuses to open his heart, how can the love of God abide in him?But whoever has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, then closes his heart of compassion against him, how does God’s love remain in him?
No one can serve two masters. For you will either hate the one and love the other or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You can’t serve both God and Mammon.
As sorrowful, and yet we are always rejoicing; as poor, and yet we make many rich; as having nothing, and yet we possess everything.As sorrowful yet always rejoicing, as poor yet making many rich, as having nothing and yet possessing all things.
The Lord is my portion, I say to myself; therefore, I will place my hope in him.“Yahweh is my portion,” says my soul. “Therefore I will hope in him.”
When riches increase, so do those who are eager to accumulate them, and those who have accumulated them must remain content simply to feast their eyes on them.When goods increase, those who eat them are increased; and what advantage is there to its owner, except to feast on them with his eyes?
Then I came to realize that all toil and skill in work derive from one person’s envy of another. This also is vanity and a chase after the wind.Then I saw all the labor and achievement that is the envy of a man’s neighbor. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.
He said to them in reply, “Anyone who has two coats must share with the person who has none, and whoever has food must do likewise.”He answered them, “He who has two coats, let him give to him who has none. He who has food, let him do likewise.”
A wealthy man pays a ransom to save his life; a poor man never has to worry about such threats.The ransom of a man’s life is his riches, but the poor hear no threats.
When I fed them, they were satisfied; when they were satisfied, they became proud of heart and quickly forgot me.According to their pasture, so were they filled; they were filled, and their heart was exalted. Therefore they have forgotten me.
You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male slave, nor his female slave, nor his oxen, nor his donkey, nor anything that belongs to your neighbor.You shall not covet your neighbor’s house.
