The vine is dried up and the fig tree is withered; the pomegranate, the palm and the apple tree— all the trees of the field—are dried up. Surely the people’s joy is withered away. | The vine has dried up, and the fig tree withered— the pomegranate tree, the palm tree also, and the apple tree, even all of the trees of the field are withered; for joy has withered away from the sons of men. |
You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder. | You believe that God is one. You do well. The demons also believe—and shudder. |

Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. | Therefore be merciful, even as your Father is also merciful. |
But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ. | For our citizenship is in heaven, from where we also wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. |
For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. | For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus. |
“Are you so dull?” he asked. “Don’t you see that nothing that enters a person from the outside can defile them? For it doesn’t go into their heart but into their stomach, and then out of the body.” (In saying this, Jesus declared all foods clean.) | He said to them, “Are you also without understanding? Don’t you perceive that whatever goes into the man from outside can’t defile him, because it doesn’t go into his heart, but into his stomach, then into the latrine, making all foods clean?” |
But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.” | But just as he who called you is holy, you yourselves also be holy in all of your behavior, because it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” |
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. | Therefore let’s also, seeing we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let’s run with perseverance the race that is set before us. |
One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and as his disciples walked along, they began to pick some heads of grain. The Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?” He answered, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need? In the days of Abiathar the high priest, he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions.” Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.” | He was going on the Sabbath day through the grain fields; and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of grain. The Pharisees said to him, “Behold, why do they do that which is not lawful on the Sabbath day?” He said to them, “Did you never read what David did when he had need and was hungry—he, and those who were with him? How he entered into God’s house at the time of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the show bread, which is not lawful to eat except for the priests, and gave also to those who were with him?” He said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. Therefore the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath.” |
Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. | As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so he who feeds on me will also live because of me. |
My lips will shout for joy when I sing praise to you— I whom you have delivered. | My lips shall shout for joy! My soul, which you have redeemed, sings praises to you! |
For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus. | For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus. |
And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. | He is the head of the body, the assembly, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things he might have the preeminence. |
This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. | By this we know love, because he laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. |
So Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him. | So Christ also, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin, but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him. |
And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. | I also tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my assembly, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. |
So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets. | Therefore, whatever you desire for men to do to you, you shall also do to them; for this is the law and the prophets. |
Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. | For as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, being many, are one body; so also is Christ. |
And walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. | Walk in love, even as Christ also loved us and gave himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling fragrance. |
And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him. | And if we know that he listens to us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions which we have asked of him. |
The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body but yields it to her husband. In the same way, the husband does not have authority over his own body but yields it to his wife. | Let the husband give his wife the affection owed her, and likewise also the wife her husband. The wife doesn’t have authority over her own body, but the husband does. Likewise also the husband doesn’t have authority over his own body, but the wife does. |
Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them. | Therefore he is also able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, seeing that he lives forever to make intercession for them. |
Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. | Also delight yourself in Yahweh, and he will give you the desires of your heart. |
Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth. | Therefore God also highly exalted him, and gave to him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, those on earth, and those under the earth. |
For with much wisdom comes much sorrow; the more knowledge, the more grief. | For in much wisdom is much grief; and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow. |
