When I said, My foot slippeth; thy mercy, O Lord, held me up. | When I realized that my foot was slipping, your kindness, O Lord, raised me up. |
Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil. | Do not swerve either to the right or to the left; keep your foot far from evil. |
|
He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. | He will not permit your foot to stumble; he who guards you will not fall asleep. |
But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold. My foot hath held his steps, his way have I kept, and not declined. | And yet he is aware of everywhere I go; if he were to test me, I would emerge like pure gold. My footsteps have not strayed from the path he established; I have followed his way and never turned aside. |
But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne: Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. | But what I tell you is this: Do not swear at all, either by heaven, since it is God’s throne, or by earth, since that is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, since that is the city of the great King. |
Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. | You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, what can be done to make it salty once again? It is no longer good for anything, and thus it is cast out and trampled underfoot. |
He will turn again, he will have compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities; and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea. | You will again show us compassion and wash away our guilt; you will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea. |
If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: Then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it. | If you refrain from traveling on the Sabbath and from engaging in your own interests on my holy day, if you call the Sabbath a day of joy and regard the Lord’s holy day as honorable, if you honor it by not going your own way, serving your own interests, or attending to your own affairs; then you will find true happiness in the Lord, and I will enable you to ride upon the heights of the earth. I will nourish you with the heritage of your father Jacob, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken. |
Order my steps in thy word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me. | Guide my steps in accord with your word and never let evil triumph over me. |
Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: Neither give place to the devil. | If you are angry, do not sin. Do not let the sun set on your anger, and do not give the devil an opening. |
Teach me to do thy will; for thou art my God: thy spirit is good; lead me into the land of uprightness. | Teach me to do your will, for you are my God. Let your gracious Spirit lead me along a level path. |
For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps. | This, in fact, is what you have been called to do, because Christ himself suffered for you and left an example for you to follow in his footsteps. |
