However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.So again I say, each man must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.
Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.
The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty.A prudent person foresees danger and takes precautions. The simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences.
And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’I didn’t know he was the one, but when God sent me to baptize with water, he told me, ‘The one on whom you see the Spirit descend and rest is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’
Blessed is the one whom God corrects; so do not despise the discipline of the Almighty.But consider the joy of those corrected by God! Do not despise the discipline of the Almighty when you sin.
In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.In the same way, husbands ought to love their wives as they love their own bodies. For a man who loves his wife actually shows love for himself.
Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation. I will spare them as a father spares an obedient child.”
Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers.Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers.
In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps.
To the faithful you show yourself faithful, to the blameless you show yourself blameless.To the faithful you show yourself faithful; to those with integrity you show integrity.
Fools show their annoyance at once, but the prudent overlook an insult.A fool is quick-tempered, but a wise person stays calm when insulted.
“Go,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you.” Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road.And Jesus said to him, “Go, for your faith has healed you.” Instantly the man could see, and he followed Jesus down the road.
One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.There are “friends” who destroy each other, but a real friend sticks closer than a brother.
Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control.A person without self-control is like a city with broken-down walls.
Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes.Be still in the presence of the Lord, and wait patiently for him to act. Don’t worry about evil people who prosper or fret about their wicked schemes.
He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.No, O people, the Lord has told you what is good, and this is what he requires of you: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.
For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.Above all, you must realize that no prophecy in Scripture ever came from the prophet’s own understanding, or from human initiative. No, those prophets were moved by the Holy Spirit, and they spoke from God.
Anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up.Worry weighs a person down; an encouraging word cheers a person up.
He went on: “What comes out of a person is what defiles them. For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come—sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. All these evils come from inside and defile a person.”And then he added, “It is what comes from inside that defiles you. For from within, out of a person’s heart, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, wickedness, deceit, lustful desires, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness. All these vile things come from within; they are what defile you.”
Words from the mouth of the wise are gracious, but fools are consumed by their own lips.Wise words bring approval, but fools are destroyed by their own words.
Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.Don’t lie to each other, for you have stripped off your old sinful nature and all its wicked deeds. Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like him.
The wealth of the rich is their fortified city; they imagine it a wall too high to scale.The rich think of their wealth as a strong defense; they imagine it to be a high wall of safety.
My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry.
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.
