| He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls. | Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control. |
| For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. | For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline. |

| Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. | Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight. |
| For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. | For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. |
