Life after death (2/4)

  • I baptize you with water for repentance, but the one who is coming after me is more powerful than I am. I am not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
  • Then I came to realize that all toil and skill in work derive from one person’s envy of another. This also is vanity and a chase after the wind.
  • After this, he said to the crowd, “Take care to be on your guard against all kinds of greed. Life does not depend upon an abundance of one’s possessions.”
  • For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor present things, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
  • Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
  • Though he was in the form of God,
he did not regard equality with God
    as something to be grasped.
    Rather, he emptied himself,
taking the form of a slave,
    being born in human likeness.
Being found in appearance as a man,
    he humbled himself,
    and became obedient to death,
    even death on a cross.
  • And anyone who does not take up his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.
  • For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.
  • For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
  • The heavens proclaim the glory of God;
the firmament shows forth the work of his hands.
One day imparts that message to the next,
and night conveys that knowledge to night.
  • Whoever pursues righteousness and kindness
will find life and honor too.
  • You shall obey his statutes and the commandments that I give you today, so that all may go well with you and your children after you, and that you may live long in the land that the Lord, your God, has given you for all time.
  • Set me as a seal on your heart,
as a seal upon your arm.
For love is as strong as death,
and ardor is as relentless as the netherworld.
Its flames are flashes of fire,
    an unending blaze.
  • It is rash to pledge a sacred gift,
or to make a vow and then have second thoughts.
  • And so you should put to death everything in your nature that is earthly: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desires, and greed (which is idolatry).
  • Then he said to all who were with him, “Anyone who wishes to follow me must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow me.”
  • Do I derive any pleasure from the death of the wicked? asks the Lord God. Would I not rather rejoice to see them turn away from their wickedness and live?
  • For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the sake of the gospel will save it.
  • Even though I wander
through the valley of the shadow of death,
    I will fear no evil,
for you are at my side,
with your rod and your staff
    that comfort me.
  • Blessed and holy are those who share in the first resurrection. The second death has no power over them. They will be priests of God and of Christ, and they will reign with him for a thousand years.
  • Behold, we are now going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death. Then they will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and scourged and crucified, and on the third day he will be raised to life.
  • Nor should you present any part of your body as an instrument for wickedness leading to sin. Rather, present yourselves to God as having been raised from death to life and the parts of your body to God as instruments for righteousness.
  • Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life;
whoever does not believe in the Son will not see life,
but the wrath of God rests upon him.
  • While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after he had pronounced the blessing, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take this and eat; this is my body.”
  • And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and the scrolls were opened. Then another scroll was opened, the book of life, and the dead were judged according to their deeds, as were recorded in the scrolls. The sea gave up all the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them. The dead were judged according to their deeds.

When you look at the tassels, you will remember the commandments of the Lord and keep them. Thus you will not prostitute yourselves by following after the lusts in your own heart or your own eyes.
