Bible Verses about Poverty
- Jesus said to him, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”
- I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.
- Open your mouth, judge righteously,
And plead the cause of the poor and needy. - In all labor there is profit,
But idle chatter leads only to poverty. - Defend the poor and fatherless;
Do justice to the afflicted and needy. - As sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things.
- He answered and said to them, “He who has two tunics, let him give to him who has none; and he who has food, let him do likewise.”
- The Lord makes poor and makes rich;
He brings low and lifts up. - Thus says the Lord of hosts:
‘Execute true justice,
Show mercy and compassion
Everyone to his brother.
Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless,
The alien or the poor.
Let none of you plan evil in his heart
Against his brother.’ - The rich rules over the poor,
And the borrower is servant to the lender. - This poor man cried out, and the Lord heard him,
And saved him out of all his troubles. - Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
- Remove falsehood and lies far from me;
Give me neither poverty nor riches—
Feed me with the food allotted to me. - The ransom of a man’s life is his riches,
But the poor does not hear rebuke. - Because I delivered the poor who cried out,
The fatherless and the one who had no helper.
The blessing of a perishing man came upon me,
And I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy. - What is desired in a man is kindness,
And a poor man is better than a liar. - The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me
To preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set at liberty those who are oppressed. - And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.
- The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me,
Because the Lord has anointed Me
To preach good tidings to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives,
And the opening of the prison to those who are bound. - Arise, O Lord!
O God, lift up Your hand!
Do not forget the humble.
