Bible Verses about Poverty
- Jesus said to him, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.”
- I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need.
- Open your mouth, judge righteously,
defend the rights of the poor and needy. - In all toil there is profit,
but mere talk tends only to poverty. - Give justice to the weak and the fatherless;
maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute. - The rich rules over the poor,
and the borrower is the slave of the lender. - Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword?
- As sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, yet possessing everything.
- Thus says the Lord of hosts, Render true judgments, show kindness and mercy to one another, do not oppress the widow, the fatherless, the sojourner, or the poor, and let none of you devise evil against another in your heart.
- The Lord makes poor and makes rich;
he brings low and he exalts. - This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him
and saved him out of all his troubles. - Remove far from me falsehood and lying;
give me neither poverty nor riches;
feed me with the food that is needful for me. - If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.
- The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
and recovering of sight to the blind,
to set at liberty those who are oppressed. - And he answered them, “Whoever has two tunics is to share with him who has none, and whoever has food is to do likewise.”
- The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me,
because the Lord has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor;
he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives,
and the opening of the prison to those who are bound. - What is desired in a man is steadfast love,
and a poor man is better than a liar. - Because I delivered the poor who cried for help,
and the fatherless who had none to help him.
The blessing of him who was about to perish came upon me,
and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy. - The ransom of a man's life is his wealth,
but a poor man hears no threat.
