Then the rib which the Lord God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man. And Adam said: “This is now bone of my bones And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man.” Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. | And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. So Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation. | So Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin, but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him. |
Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, But the Lord weighs the hearts. | All deeds are right in the sight of the doer, but the Lord weighs the heart. |
For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? | For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? |
The fear of man brings a snare, But whoever trusts in the Lord shall be safe. | The fear of others lays a snare, but one who trusts in the Lord is secure. |
Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, But a good word makes it glad. | Anxiety weighs down the human heart, but a good word cheers it up. |
Many shall be purified, made white, and refined, but the wicked shall do wickedly; and none of the wicked shall understand, but the wise shall understand. | Many shall be purified, cleansed, and refined, but the wicked shall continue to act wickedly. None of the wicked shall understand, but those who are wise shall understand. |
A good man deals graciously and lends; He will guide his affairs with discretion. | It is well with those who deal generously and lend, who conduct their affairs with justice. |
It is honorable for a man to stop striving, Since any fool can start a quarrel. | It is honorable to refrain from strife, but every fool is quick to quarrel. |
But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. | But those who want to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. |
Before destruction the heart of a man is haughty, And before honor is humility. | Before destruction one's heart is haughty, but humility goes before honor. |
So we may boldly say: “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?” | So we can say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can anyone do to me?” |
The hand of the diligent will rule, But the lazy man will be put to forced labor. | The hand of the diligent will rule, while the lazy will be put to forced labor. |
This poor man cried out, and the Lord heard him, And saved him out of all his troubles. | This poor soul cried, and was heard by the Lord, and was saved from every trouble. |
A prudent man foresees evil and hides himself; The simple pass on and are punished. | The clever see danger and hide; but the simple go on, and suffer for it. |
Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. | Fight the good fight of the faith; take hold of the eternal life, to which you were called and for which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. |
So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath. | You must understand this, my beloved: let everyone be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger. |
