“Have I any pleasure in the death of the wicked?” says the Lord Yahweh, “and not rather that he should return from his way, and live?” | Do I derive any pleasure from the death of the wicked? asks the Lord God. Would I not rather rejoice to see them turn away from their wickedness and live? |
Even a fool, when he keeps silent, is counted wise. When he shuts his lips, he is thought to be discerning. | Even a fool who keeps silent is considered wise; if he closes his lips, he is regarded as intelligent. |
For whoever wants to save his life will lose it; and whoever will lose his life for my sake and the sake of the Good News will save it. | For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the sake of the gospel will save it. |

Rest in Yahweh, and wait patiently for him. Don’t fret because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who makes wicked plots happen. | Wait quietly for the Lord and be patient until he comes. Do not fret over the man who prospers because of his evil schemes. |
He who keeps the commandment keeps his soul, but he who is contemptuous in his ways shall die. | Whoever observes the commandments will live, but the one who scorns them will die. |
A fool shows his annoyance the same day, but one who overlooks an insult is prudent. | A fool is quick to show his anger, but a prudent man ignores an insult. |
But if anyone doesn’t provide for his own, and especially his own household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. | And whoever does not provide for relatives, especially for those who are living with him, has disowned the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. |
Because the midwives feared God, he gave them families. | God gave the midwives numerous families because they had feared God. |

A man’s heart plans his course, but Yahweh directs his steps. | A man may plan his own course, but the Lord makes his steps secure. |
Don’t envy the man of violence. Choose none of his ways. For the perverse is an abomination to Yahweh, but his friendship is with the upright. | Do not envy a violent man or choose to emulate any of his ways. For the perverse man is an abomination to the Lord whose friendship is bestowed only upon the upright. |
The words of a wise man’s mouth are gracious; but a fool is swallowed by his own lips. | The words of a wise man win favor, but a fool’s tongue is his undoing. |
For in much wisdom is much grief; and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow. | For much wisdom can result in much sorrow, and those who increase their knowledge also increase their grief. |
A fool has no delight in understanding, but only in revealing his own opinion. | A fool takes no pleasure in understanding but only delights in expressing his own opinions. |
The ransom of a man’s life is his riches, but the poor hear no threats. | A wealthy man pays a ransom to save his life; a poor man never has to worry about such threats. |
Most certainly I tell you, a servant is not greater than his lord, neither is one who is sent greater than he who sent him. | Amen, amen, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. |
Many will purify themselves, and make themselves white, and be refined, but the wicked will do wickedly; and none of the wicked will understand, but those who are wise will understand. | Many shall be purified, cleansed, and refined, but the wicked will persist in their evil ways. |
Who are you who judge another’s servant? To his own lord he stands or falls. Yes, he will be made to stand, for God has power to make him stand. | What right do you have to pass judgment on someone else’s servant? The master will determine whether that servant will stand or fall. But the servant will be upheld, for the Lord has the power to enable him to stand. |
For, “He who would love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit. Let him turn away from evil and do good. Let him seek peace and pursue it.” | For: “If anyone wishes to love life and to experience good days, he must restrain his tongue from evil and his lips from deceitful speech. He must turn away from evil and do good, seek peace and pursue it.” |
