- He must increase;
I must decrease. - I keep the Lord always before me,
for with him at my right hand
I will never fall. - Whom do I have in heaven except you?
And besides you there is nothing else I desire on earth. - Does it now appear to you that I am trying to gain the approval of human beings rather than the approval of God? Am I seeking to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.
- If I give away everything to feed the poor
and hand over my body to be burned,
but do not have love,
I achieve nothing. - I will extol you, my God and King;
I will bless your name forever and ever. - I will offer praise to you, O Lord,
with my whole heart;
I will recount all your wondrous deeds. - At dawn let me experience your kindness,
for in you I place my trust.
Show me the path I must walk,
for to you I lift up my soul. - For this reason, I rejoice when I endure weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and distress for the sake of Christ. For it is when I am weak that I am strong.
- I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord;
I have no good apart from you.” - I will give thanks to you among the peoples, O Lord;
I will sing your praises among the nations. - But as for me, I will look to the Lord.
I place my hope in God my savior;
my God will hear me. - Peace I leave with you,
my peace I give to you.
Not as the world gives
do I give it to you.
Do not let your hearts be troubled;
be not afraid. - I shall forgive them for their wicked deeds,
and I shall remember their sins no more. - I have made your name known to them,
and I will make it known,
so that the love with which you loved me
may be in them, and I in them. - Jesus then said,
“I will remain with you
only for a short time longer,
and then I shall return
to him who sent me.” - Protect me, O God,
for in you I take refuge. - For I will provide the weary with all they need, and I will restore the strength of all those who have grown faint with hunger.
- Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace but a sword.
- I have made a covenant with my eyes
not to look with desire upon a virgin. - I will instruct you
and guide you in the way you should go;
I will counsel you
and keep my eyes upon you. - Amen, amen, I say to you,
the one who believes in me
will also do the works that I do,
and indeed will do even greater ones than these,
because I am going to the Father. - I came from the Father
and have come into the world.
Now I am leaving the world
and returning to the Father. - And now it is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me. The life I live now in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave himself up for me.
- The Lord is my portion, I say to myself;
therefore, I will place my hope in him.
