Like a city that is broken into and without walls So is a person who has no self-control over his spirit. | Like a city breached, without walls, is one who lacks self-control. |
He has told you, mortal one, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you But to do justice, to love kindness, And to walk humbly with your God? | He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? |
The wicked borrows and does not pay back, But the righteous is gracious and gives. | The wicked borrow, and do not pay back, but the righteous are generous and keep giving. |
All day long he is craving, While the righteous gives and does not hold back. | All day long the wicked covet, but the righteous give and do not hold back. |
With the faithful You show Yourself faithful; With the blameless You prove Yourself blameless. | With the loyal you show yourself loyal; with the blameless you show yourself blameless. |
A person of too many friends comes to ruin, But there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. | Some friends play at friendship but a true friend sticks closer than one's nearest kin. |
Nevertheless, as for you individually, each husband is to love his own wife the same as himself, and the wife must see to it that she respects her husband. | Each of you, however, should love his wife as himself, and a wife should respect her husband. |
Do not envy a violent person, And do not choose any of his ways. For he will be like a tree planted by the water That extends its roots by a stream, And does not fear when the heat comes; But its leaves will be green, And it will not be anxious in a year of drought, Nor cease to yield fruit. | Blessed are those who trust in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. They shall be like a tree planted by water, sending out its roots by the stream. It shall not fear when heat comes, and its leaves shall stay green; in the year of drought it is not anxious, and it does not cease to bear fruit. |
