- How much more valuable a man is than a sheep! Therefore, it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.
- So if anyone says to you, ‘Behold, he is in the wilderness,’ do not go out there. If they say, ‘Behold, he is in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. For just as lightning comes from the east and is visible even in the west, so will the coming of the Son of Man be.
- The words of a wise man win favor,
but a fool’s tongue is his undoing. - Blessed is the man whom God reproves.
Therefore, do not reject the discipline of the Almighty. - One day, as Jesus was passing through a field of grain on the Sabbath, his disciples began to pick some heads of grain as they walked along. The Pharisees said to him, “Behold, why are your disciples doing what is forbidden on the Sabbath?”
He answered, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need of food? He entered the house of God when Abiathar was high priest and ate the sacred bread that only the priests were permitted to eat, and he shared it with his companions.” Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. That is why the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.” - Thus you could understand that the Lord, your God, was disciplining you, just like a father disciplines his son.
- A man’s attraction is his kindness;
it is far better to be poor than to be a liar. - The prudent man perceives danger and seeks shelter,
while the simple continue forward and pay the penalty. - Do not envy a violent man
or choose to emulate any of his ways.
For the perverse man is an abomination to the Lord
whose friendship is bestowed only upon the upright. - Do not let kindness and fidelity leave you;
fasten them around your neck
and inscribe them on the tablet of your heart.
Then you will gain favor and a good name
in the sight of God and man. - He replied, “Have you not read that from the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female’ and said: ‘That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two become one flesh’? And so they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, let no one separate.”
- Behold, we are now going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death. Then they will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and scourged and crucified, and on the third day he will be raised to life.
- Like a city that has been breached and made defenseless
is the man devoid of self-control. - With the Lord to protect me I am not afraid.
What can mortals do to me? - I, I alone, am the one who comforts you.
Why then do you fear mortal men who must die,
human beings who must perish like grass? - He will never be swayed;
the righteous man will be remembered forever. - The wealth of a rich man is his stronghold;
he regards it as a high wall that cannot be scaled. - Do not be deceived; God cannot be mocked. A person will reap only what he sows.
- A wise man will heed commandments,
but a babbling fool will come to grief. - Just as water reflects one’s face,
so does one human heart reflect another. - In the same way, husbands should love their wives as they do their own bodies. The man who loves his wife loves himself.
- The name of the Lord is a tower of strength;
the upright man runs to it and finds refuge. - One who gossips reveals secrets,
but a trustworthy man keeps things hidden. - Wait quietly for the Lord
and be patient until he comes.
Do not fret over the man who prospers
because of his evil schemes. - Blessed is the man
who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stand in the way of sinners,
nor sit in the company of scoffers.
