Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven. | Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle. |
But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall. | But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its rays. And you will go out and frolic like well-fed calves. |
|
But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. | But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. |
For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. | For, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” |
And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. | And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. |
Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. | Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. |
He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee, Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again. | He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: ‘The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’ |
He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler. | He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. |
Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident. | Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then I will be confident. |
Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. | Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. |
And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning. | As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit came on them as he had come on us at the beginning. |
How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days. | How much more valuable is a person than a sheep! Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath. |
Then went in also that other disciple, which came first to the sepulchre, and he saw, and believed. For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead. | Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed. (They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.) |
Blessings are upon the head of the just: but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked. | Blessings crown the head of the righteous, but violence overwhelms the mouth of the wicked. |
But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof. | Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh. |
And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord. | And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name. |
Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. | You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. |
The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry. | The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are attentive to their cry. |
Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart. | Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. |
For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. | For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. |
Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord. | Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord. |
Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed. | “He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.” |
Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be betrayed unto the chief priests and unto the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death, And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him: and the third day he shall rise again. | We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified. On the third day he will be raised to life! |
When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. | On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied. |
