- To you, O God of my ancestors,
I give thanks and praise,
for you have given me wisdom and power,
and have now revealed to me what we asked of you,
for you have revealed to us what the king ordered. - In reply he said to them, “Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none; and whoever has food must do likewise.”
- Pay to all what is due them—taxes to whom taxes are due, revenue to whom revenue is due, respect to whom respect is due, honor to whom honor is due.
- My child, do not forget my teaching,
but let your heart keep my commandments;
for length of days and years of life
and abundant welfare they will give you. - No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.
- For not by their own sword did they win the land,
nor did their own arm give them victory;
but your right hand, and your arm,
and the light of your countenance,
for you delighted in them. - Well then, does God supply you with the Spirit and work miracles among you by your doing the works of the law, or by your believing what you heard?
- Tell slaves to be submissive to their masters and to give satisfaction in every respect; they are not to talk back, not to pilfer, but to show complete and perfect fidelity, so that in everything they may be an ornament to the doctrine of God our Savior.
- All this took place to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet:
“Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and they shall name him Emmanuel,”
which means, “God is with us.” - Do not deprive one another except perhaps by agreement for a set time, to devote yourselves to prayer, and then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.
- The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus.”
- In fulfillment of his own purpose he gave us birth by the word of truth, so that we would become a kind of first fruits of his creatures.
- A fool gives full vent to anger,
but the wise quietly holds it back. - God said, “See, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food.”
- But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able to make this freewill offering? For all things come from you, and of your own have we given you.
- For if the eagerness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has—not according to what one does not have.
- Keep straight the path of your feet,
and all your ways will be sure. - I will praise you with an upright heart,
when I learn your righteous ordinances. - While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.
- For the same reason you also pay taxes, for the authorities are God's servants, busy with this very thing.
- May mercy, peace, and love be yours in abundance.
- Let us therefore make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one may fall through such disobedience as theirs.
- House and wealth are inherited from parents,
but a prudent wife is from the Lord. - Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels?
- Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.
