- Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan River. He was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, where he was tempted by the devil for forty days. Jesus ate nothing all that time and became very hungry.
- All that time I had eaten no rich food. No meat or wine crossed my lips, and I used no fragrant lotions until those three weeks had passed.

He went into the house of God (during the days when Abiathar was high priest) and broke the law by eating the sacred loaves of bread that only the priests are allowed to eat. He also gave some to his companions.” Then Jesus said to them, “The Sabbath was made to meet the needs of people, and not people to meet the requirements of the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord, even over the Sabbath!”

- The rich can pay a ransom for their lives,
but the poor won’t even get threatened. - Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do. Remember, the Lord is coming soon.
- Walk with the wise and become wise;
associate with fools and get in trouble. - A troublemaker plants seeds of strife;
gossip separates the best of friends. - Love prospers when a fault is forgiven,
but dwelling on it separates close friends. - In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.
- Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death?
- He loves whatever is just and good;
the unfailing love of the Lord fills the earth. - Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil.
- Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow.
- And I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. Whatever you forbid on earth will be forbidden in heaven, and whatever you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven.
- There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.
- So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
- And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you.
- Create in me a clean heart, O God.
Renew a loyal spirit within me. - Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have.
- Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children.

and all the stars were born. - We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne.
- Therefore, tell them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: No more delay! I will now do everything I have threatened. I, the Sovereign Lord, have spoken!’
- But I will send you the Advocate—the Spirit of truth. He will come to you from the Father and will testify all about me.
- And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father.
- My child, pay attention to what I say.
Listen carefully to my words.
Don’t lose sight of them.
Let them penetrate deep into your heart. - When God saw what they had done and how they had put a stop to their evil ways, he changed his mind and did not carry out the destruction he had threatened.
- You can enter God’s Kingdom only through the narrow gate. The highway to hell is broad, and its gate is wide for the many who choose that way. But the gateway to life is very narrow and the road is difficult, and only a few ever find it.
