- A trustworthy witness will not lie,
But a false witness declares lies. - Keep deception and lies far from me,
Give me neither poverty nor riches;
Feed me with the food that is my portion. - Keep your tongue from evil
And your lips from speaking deceit. - You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he tells a lie, he speaks from his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of lies.
- It is He who reveals the profound and hidden things;
He knows what is in the darkness,
And the light dwells with Him. - Let your eyes look directly ahead
And let your gaze be fixed straight in front of you. - Both riches and honor come from You, and You rule over all, and in Your hand is power and might; and it lies in Your hand to make great and to strengthen everyone.
- Excellent speech is not fitting for a fool,
Much less are lying lips to a prince. - This is what the Lord says:
“Stand by the ways and see and ask for the ancient paths,
Where the good way is, and walk in it;
Then you will find a resting place for your souls.
But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’” - Therefore, since we also have such a great cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let’s rid ourselves of every obstacle and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let’s run with endurance the race that is set before us.
- For,
“The one who desires life, to love and see good days,
Must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit.
He must turn away from evil and do good;
He must seek peace and pursue it.” - A fool rejects his father’s discipline,
But he who complies with rebuke is sensible. - The conclusion, when everything has been heard, is: fear God and keep His commandments, because this applies to every person.
- Now He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness.
- Instruct those who are rich in this present world not to be conceited or to set their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly supplies us with all things to enjoy.
- When you set your eyes on it, it is gone.
For wealth certainly makes itself wings
Like an eagle that flies toward the heavens. - These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. And you shall repeat them diligently to your sons and speak of them when you sit in your house, when you walk on the road, when you lie down, and when you get up.
A prudent person sees evil and hides himself;
But the naive proceed, and pay the penalty.
