  • When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven.
  • But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.”
  • The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.”
  • For no word from God will ever fail.
  • So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child.
  • While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.
  • But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.”
  • Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.
  • Glory to God in the highest heaven,
    and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.
  • The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.
  • John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.”
  • When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”

Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.
