| For what good will it do a person if he gains the whole world, but forfeits his soul? Or what will a person give in exchange for his soul? | What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his very life? Or what can he give in exchange for his life? |
| Nevertheless, as for you individually, each husband is to love his own wife the same as himself, and the wife must see to it that she respects her husband. | However, each one of you should love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife should respect her husband. |
| Like a city that is broken into and without walls So is a person who has no self-control over his spirit. | Like a city that has been breached and made defenseless is the man devoid of self-control. |
| Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! | For one will hardly die for a righteous person; though perhaps for the good person someone would even dare to die. | And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways and love Him, and to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to keep the Lord’s commandments and His statutes which I am commanding you today for your good? | And so now, O Israel, what does the Lord, your God, require of you but to fear the Lord, your God, to walk in all of his ways, to love him, to serve the Lord, your God, with all your heart and all your soul, and to observe the commandments and the statutes that I am giving you today for your own good. |
| For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not a result of works, so that no one may boast. | For it is by grace that you have been saved through faith. | But He said to them, “Beware, and be on your guard against every form of greed; for not even when one is affluent does his life consist of his possessions.” | After this, he said to the crowd, “Take care to be on your guard against all kinds of greed. Life does not depend upon an abundance of one’s possessions.” |
| And let’s consider how to encourage one another in love and good deeds, not abandoning our own meeting together, as is the habit of some people, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near. | And let us consider how to spur one another to love and good works. Do not neglect to attend your assemblies, as some do, but rather encourage one another, especially since you can see the Day approaching. |
| One who keeps the commandment keeps his soul, But one who is careless of conduct will die. | Whoever observes the commandments will live, but the one who scorns them will die. |
| The integrity of the upright will guide them, But the perversity of the treacherous will destroy them. | The upright are guarded by their integrity; the treacherous are destroyed by their own duplicity. |
| One who guards his mouth protects his life; One who opens wide his lips comes to ruin. | He who guards his mouth makes his life secure, but one who talks excessively ensures his own downfall. |
| So you are to know in your heart that the Lord your God was disciplining you just as a man disciplines his son. | Thus you could understand that the Lord, your God, was disciplining you, just like a father disciplines his son. |
