but sorrow will cover the face of the wicked. - Go and learn what this text means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ I have come to call not the righteous but sinners.

The Lord remains close to the brokenhearted,

Now waiting for me is the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day—and not only to me, but to all those who have eagerly longed for his appearance.

humble and riding on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a donkey. - Do not fear, for I am with you;
do not be afraid, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and give you help,
I will uphold you with my victorious right hand. - Rather, let justice flow like a river,
and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream. - O Lord, hear my prayer,
incline your ear to my supplications.
In your faithfulness respond to me
with your righteousness. - If we are diligent in observing all of these commandments before the Lord, our God, as he commanded of us, then this will be our righteousness.
- But the Almighty we cannot find;
he is unequaled in power and judgment,
and in his righteousness he will not violate justice. - However, if we confess our sins,
he who is faithful and just
will forgive our sins
and cleanse us from all wrongdoing. - He is a rock, his deeds are perfect,
and all of his ways are just.
He is a God of truth who does no wrong;
he is just and upright. - Dearly beloved, never seek revenge. Leave that to the time of retribution. For it is written, “Vengeance is mine, says the Lord. I will repay.”
- Recognizing that laws are not designed for the upright. They are for the lawless and insubordinate, for the godless and sinful, for the unholy and irreligious; they are for those who slay their fathers and mothers, for murderers, for those who are fornicators, sodomites, slave traders, liars, perjurers, and for whatever else is contrary to the sound teaching that conforms to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which has been entrusted to me.
- Turn away from youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, together with those who call on the Lord with a pure heart.
- He reserves his wisdom for the upright
and is a shield to those who lead blameless lives. - For no one can be regarded as justified in the sight of God by keeping the Law. The Law brings only the consciousness of sin.
