The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the Lord shall be safe. | The fear of man brings a snare, But one who trusts in the Lord will be protected. |
He that walketh uprightly walketh surely: but he that perverteth his ways shall be known. | One who walks in integrity walks securely, But one who perverts his ways will be found out. |
|
The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way. | The steps of a man are established by the Lord, And He delights in his way. |
A man's heart deviseth his way: but the Lord directeth his steps. | The mind of a person plans his way, But the Lord directs his steps. |
I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety. | In peace I will both lie down and sleep, For You alone, Lord, have me dwell in safety. |
Trust in the Lord, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed. | Trust in the Lord and do good; Live in the land and cultivate faithfulness. |
He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction. | One who guards his mouth protects his life; One who opens wide his lips comes to ruin. |
And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. | The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ |
A talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter. | One who goes about as a slanderer reveals secrets, But one who is trustworthy conceals a matter. |
For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not. They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good. | For the customs of the peoples are futile; For it is wood cut from the forest, The work of the hands of a craftsman with a cutting tool. They decorate the idol with silver and gold; They fasten it with nails and hammers So that it will not totter. They are like a scarecrow in a cucumber field, And they cannot speak; They must be carried, Because they cannot walk! Do not fear them, For they can do no harm, Nor can they do any good. |
But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. | But as for you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door, and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you. |
But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly. | But when you give to the poor, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your charitable giving will be in secret; and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you. |
Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets. | Certainly the Lord God does nothing Unless He reveals His secret plan To His servants the prophets. |
But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly. | But as for you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that your fasting will not be noticed by people but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you. |
He revealeth the deep and secret things: he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him. | It is He who reveals the profound and hidden things; He knows what is in the darkness, And the light dwells with Him. |
And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these. | The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these. |
Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the Lord. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the Lord. | “Can a person hide himself in hiding places So that I do not see him?” declares the Lord. “Do I not fill the heavens and the earth?” declares the Lord. |
Envy thou not the oppressor, and choose none of his ways. For the froward is abomination to the Lord: but his secret is with the righteous. | Do not envy a violent person, And do not choose any of his ways. For the devious are an abomination to the Lord; But He is intimate with the upright. |
So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation. | So Christ also, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time for salvation without reference to sin, to those who eagerly await Him. |
And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret. | Do not participate in the useless deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them; for it is disgraceful even to speak of the things which are done by them in secret. |
He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. | One who dwells in the shelter of the Most High Will lodge in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, My God, in whom I trust!” |
Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years. | Blessed and holy is the one who has a part in the first resurrection; over these the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ, and will reign with Him for a thousand years. |
Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not. For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. | So if they say to you, ‘Behold, He is in the wilderness,’ do not go out; or, ‘Behold, He is in the inner rooms,’ do not believe them. For just as the lightning comes from the east and flashes as far as the west, so will the coming of the Son of Man be. |
