Even a fool is counted wise when he holds his peace; When he shuts his lips, he is considered perceptive. | Even fools who keep silent are considered wise; when they close their lips, they are deemed intelligent. |
For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it. | For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. |
There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His. | So then, a sabbath rest still remains for the people of God; for those who enter God's rest also cease from their labors as God did from his. |
For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? | For what will it profit them if they gain the whole world but forfeit their life? Or what will they give in return for their life? |
For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them. | For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them. |
A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back. | A fool gives full vent to anger, but the wise quietly holds it back. |
Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him; Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, Because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass. | Be still before the Lord, and wait patiently for him; do not fret over those who prosper in their way, over those who carry out evil devices. |
He who keeps the commandment keeps his soul, But he who is careless of his ways will die. | Those who keep the commandment will live; those who are heedless of their ways will die. |
A fool’s wrath is known at once, But a prudent man covers shame. | Fools show their anger at once, but the prudent ignore an insult. |
But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. | And whoever does not provide for relatives, and especially for family members, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. |
And so it was, because the midwives feared God, that He provided households for them. | And because the midwives feared God, he gave them families. |
For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? | For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? |
As for every man to whom God has given riches and wealth, and given him power to eat of it, to receive his heritage and rejoice in his labor—this is the gift of God. | Likewise all to whom God gives wealth and possessions and whom he enables to enjoy them, and to accept their lot and find enjoyment in their toil—this is the gift of God. |
A man’s heart plans his way, But the Lord directs his steps. | The human mind plans the way, but the Lord directs the steps. |
Do not envy the oppressor, And choose none of his ways; For the perverse person is an abomination to the Lord, But His secret counsel is with the upright. | Do not envy the violent and do not choose any of their ways; for the perverse are an abomination to the Lord, but the upright are in his confidence. |
The words of a wise man’s mouth are gracious, But the lips of a fool shall swallow him up. | Words spoken by the wise bring them favor, but the lips of fools consume them. |
For in much wisdom is much grief, And he who increases knowledge increases sorrow. | For in much wisdom is much vexation, and those who increase knowledge increase sorrow. |
A fool has no delight in understanding, But in expressing his own heart. | A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing personal opinion. |
For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died; and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again. | For the love of Christ urges us on, because we are convinced that one has died for all; therefore all have died. And he died for all, so that those who live might live no longer for themselves, but for him who died and was raised for them. |
The ransom of a man’s life is his riches, But the poor does not hear rebuke. | Wealth is a ransom for a person's life, but the poor get no threats. |
Who “will render to each one according to his deeds” | For he will repay according to each one's deeds. |
Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. | Very truly, I tell you, servants are not greater than their master, nor are messengers greater than the one who sent them. |
Many shall be purified, made white, and refined, but the wicked shall do wickedly; and none of the wicked shall understand, but the wise shall understand. | Many shall be purified, cleansed, and refined, but the wicked shall continue to act wickedly. None of the wicked shall understand, but those who are wise shall understand. |
Who are you to judge another’s servant? To his own master he stands or falls. Indeed, he will be made to stand, for God is able to make him stand. | Who are you to pass judgment on servants of another? It is before their own lord that they stand or fall. And they will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make them stand. |
For “He who would love life And see good days, Let him refrain his tongue from evil, And his lips from speaking deceit. Let him turn away from evil and do good; Let him seek peace and pursue it.” | For “Those who desire life and desire to see good days, let them keep their tongues from evil and their lips from speaking deceit; let them turn away from evil and do good; let them seek peace and pursue it.” |
