A perverse person stirs up conflict, and a gossip separates close friends. | A perverse man stirs up strife. A whisperer separates close friends. |
Fools give full vent to their rage, but the wise bring calm in the end. | A fool vents all of his anger, but a wise man brings himself under control. |
The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him. | A man’s steps are established by Yahweh. He delights in his way. |
What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? | For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? |
The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them. | Yahweh God made garments of animal skins for Adam and for his wife, and clothed them. |
There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death. | There is a way which seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death. |
Therefore, my friends, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you. Through him everyone who believes is set free from every sin, a justification you were not able to obtain under the law of Moses. | Be it known to you therefore, brothers, that through this man is proclaimed to you remission of sins; and by him everyone who believes is justified from all things, from which you could not be justified by the law of Moses. |
Before a downfall the heart is haughty, but humility comes before honor. | Before destruction the heart of man is proud, but before honor is humility. |
So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. | God created man in his own image. In God’s image he created him; male and female he created them. |
A person’s riches may ransom their life, but the poor cannot respond to threatening rebukes. | The ransom of a man’s life is his riches, but the poor hear no threats. |
But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” | But Yahweh said to Samuel, “Don’t look on his face, or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for I don’t see as man sees. For man looks at the outward appearance, but Yahweh looks at the heart.” |
It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in humans. | It is better to take refuge in Yahweh, than to put confidence in man. |
A person finds joy in giving an apt reply— and how good is a timely word! | Joy comes to a man with the reply of his mouth. How good is a word at the right time! |
Praise the Lord. Blessed are those who fear the Lord, who find great delight in his commands. | Praise Yah! Blessed is the man who fears Yahweh, who delights greatly in his commandments. |
He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor from the Lord. | Whoever finds a wife finds a good thing, and obtains favor of Yahweh. |
For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. | For who among men knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so, no one knows the things of God except God’s Spirit. |
How much more valuable is a person than a sheep! Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath. | Of how much more value then is a man than a sheep! Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath day. |
A person may think their own ways are right, but the Lord weighs the heart. | Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, but Yahweh weighs the hearts. |
The Lord said to Satan, “Very well, then, everything he has is in your power, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.” Then Satan went out from the presence of the Lord. | Yahweh said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your power. Only on himself don’t stretch out your hand.” So Satan went out from the presence of Yahweh. |
It is to one’s honor to avoid strife, but every fool is quick to quarrel. | It is an honor for a man to keep aloof from strife, but every fool will be quarreling. |
We all stumble in many ways. Anyone who is never at fault in what they say is perfect, able to keep their whole body in check. | For we all stumble in many things. Anyone who doesn’t stumble in word is a perfect person, able to bridle the whole body also. |
Good will come to those who are generous and lend freely, who conduct their affairs with justice. | It is well with the man who deals graciously and lends. He will maintain his cause in judgment. |
