Matthew (3/4)

  • Jesus said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’
  • So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will take care of itself. Each day has enough troubles of its own.
  • Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you and utter all kinds of calumnies against you for my sake.
  • “But you,” he said to them, “who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
  • Do you suppose that I cannot appeal to my Father for help and he will not immediately send me more than twelve legions of angels?
  • Jesus answered, “As it is written:
‘Man does not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of God.’ ”
  • John’s clothing was made of camel’s hair, with a leather loincloth around his waist, and his food consisted of locusts and wild honey.
  • Go and learn what this text means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ I have come to call not the righteous but sinners.
  • Everyone who hears these words of mine and acts in accordance with them will be like a wise man who constructed his house on a rock foundation.
  • But Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them. For it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs.”
  • Therefore, I tell you that every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.
  • What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his very life? Or what can he give in exchange for his life?
  • And I say to you: You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of the netherworld will not prevail against it.
  • When you pray do not go on babbling endlessly as the pagans do, for they believe that they are more likely to be heard because of their many words.
  • Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my heavenly Father.
  • And the good news of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the entire world as a testimony offered to all the nations. And then the end will come.
  • Have no fear of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, fear the one who can destroy both soul and body in Gehenna.
  • This is how you should pray:
    ‘Our Father in heaven,
    hallowed be your name.
    Your kingdom come.
    Your will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.’
  • If your brother wrongs you, go and take up the matter with him when the two of you are alone. If he listens to you, you have won your brother over.
  • While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after he had pronounced the blessing, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take this and eat; this is my body.”
  • Jesus replied, “If you wish to be perfect, go, sell your possessions, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
  • Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not a single letter, not even a tiny portion of a letter, will disappear from the Law until all things have been accomplished.
  • If he refuses to listen to them, report it to the Church. And if he refuses to listen to the Church, treat him as you would a Gentile or a tax collector.
  • Gaze upon the birds in the sky. They do not sow or reap or store in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of far greater value than they?
  • This must not be so with you. Instead, whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be your servant.

The seed sown among thorns is the one who hears the word, but worldly cares and the lure of riches choke the word and it bears no fruit.

For you did not receive a spirit of slavery leading to fear; rather, you received the Spirit of adoption, enabling us to cry out, “Abba! Father!”
