Chinese (traditional)- A gift opens the way
and ushers the giver into the presence of the great. - I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. That each of them may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil—this is the gift of God.
- Keep on loving one another as brothers and sisters. Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.
- Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.
- Come back to your senses as you ought, and stop sinning; for there are some who are ignorant of God—I say this to your shame.
- Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone.
- You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.
- Who is a God like you,
who pardons sin and forgives the transgression
of the remnant of his inheritance?
You do not stay angry forever
but delight to show mercy. - In that day you will say:
“Give praise to the Lord, proclaim his name;
make known among the nations what he has done,
and proclaim that his name is exalted.” - And a highway will be there;
it will be called the Way of Holiness;
it will be for those who walk on that Way.
The unclean will not journey on it;
wicked fools will not go about on it. - For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
- Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near.
- The integrity of the upright guides them,
but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity. - If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.
- Let love and faithfulness never leave you;
bind them around your neck,
write them on the tablet of your heart.
Then you will win favor and a good name
in the sight of God and man. - Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always strive to do what is good for each other and for everyone else.
- How abundant are the good things
that you have stored up for those who fear you,
that you bestow in the sight of all,
on those who take refuge in you. - On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.”
- Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests. - May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else, just as ours does for you.
- Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves,
for the rights of all who are destitute. - But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.
- Walk with the wise and become wise,
for a companion of fools suffers harm. - For the practices of the peoples are worthless;
they cut a tree out of the forest,
and a craftsman shapes it with his chisel.
They adorn it with silver and gold;
they fasten it with hammer and nails
so it will not totter.
Like a scarecrow in a cucumber field,
their idols cannot speak;
they must be carried
because they cannot walk.
Do not fear them;
they can do no harm
nor can they do any good. - Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
A person finds joy in giving an apt reply—
and how good is a timely word!
