| Have mercy on me, O God, because of your unfailing love. Because of your great compassion, blot out the stain of my sins. Wash me clean from my guilt. | For no one can ever be made right with God by doing what the law commands. The law simply shows us how sinful we are. | Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. |
| Suppose you sin by violating one of the Lord’s commands. | But most of all, my brothers and sisters, never take an oath, by heaven or earth or anything else. | For the kind of sorrow God wants us to experience leads us away from sin and results in salvation. There’s no regret for that kind of sorrow. But worldly sorrow, which lacks repentance, results in spiritual death. | For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death. |
