Even a fool is counted wise when he holds his peace; When he shuts his lips, he is considered perceptive. | Even a fool who keeps silent is considered wise; if he closes his lips, he is regarded as intelligent. |
For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it. | For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the sake of the gospel will save it. |
There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His. | Therefore, a Sabbath rest still remains for the people of God, since those who enter into God’s rest also cease from their own labors as God did from his. |
For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? | What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his very life? Or what can he give in exchange for his life? |
For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them. | For where two or three are gathered together in my name, I am there in their midst. |
A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back. | A fool gives free rein to his anger, but a wise man bides his time and calms it. |
Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him; Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, Because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass. | Wait quietly for the Lord and be patient until he comes. Do not fret over the man who prospers because of his evil schemes. |
He who keeps the commandment keeps his soul, But he who is careless of his ways will die. | Whoever observes the commandments will live, but the one who scorns them will die. |
A fool’s wrath is known at once, But a prudent man covers shame. | A fool is quick to show his anger, but a prudent man ignores an insult. |
But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. | And whoever does not provide for relatives, especially for those who are living with him, has disowned the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. |
And so it was, because the midwives feared God, that He provided households for them. | God gave the midwives numerous families because they had feared God. |
For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? | What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his very life? |
As for every man to whom God has given riches and wealth, and given him power to eat of it, to receive his heritage and rejoice in his labor—this is the gift of God. | Moreover, the one to whom God grants wealth and possessions and the ability to enjoy them and to find contentment in his toil receives a gift from God. |
A man’s heart plans his way, But the Lord directs his steps. | A man may plan his own course, but the Lord makes his steps secure. |
Do not envy the oppressor, And choose none of his ways; For the perverse person is an abomination to the Lord, But His secret counsel is with the upright. | Do not envy a violent man or choose to emulate any of his ways. For the perverse man is an abomination to the Lord whose friendship is bestowed only upon the upright. |
The words of a wise man’s mouth are gracious, But the lips of a fool shall swallow him up. | The words of a wise man win favor, but a fool’s tongue is his undoing. |
For in much wisdom is much grief, And he who increases knowledge increases sorrow. | For much wisdom can result in much sorrow, and those who increase their knowledge also increase their grief. |
A fool has no delight in understanding, But in expressing his own heart. | A fool takes no pleasure in understanding but only delights in expressing his own opinions. |
For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died; and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again. | For the love of Christ urges us forward, once we conclude that one has died for all, and therefore all have died. And he died for all, so that those who live might no longer live for themselves, but for him who for their sakes died and was raised to life. |
The ransom of a man’s life is his riches, But the poor does not hear rebuke. | A wealthy man pays a ransom to save his life; a poor man never has to worry about such threats. |
Who “will render to each one according to his deeds” | For God will repay everyone in accordance with what his deeds deserve. |
Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. | Amen, amen, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. |
Many shall be purified, made white, and refined, but the wicked shall do wickedly; and none of the wicked shall understand, but the wise shall understand. | Many shall be purified, cleansed, and refined, but the wicked will persist in their evil ways. |
Who are you to judge another’s servant? To his own master he stands or falls. Indeed, he will be made to stand, for God is able to make him stand. | What right do you have to pass judgment on someone else’s servant? The master will determine whether that servant will stand or fall. But the servant will be upheld, for the Lord has the power to enable him to stand. |
For “He who would love life And see good days, Let him refrain his tongue from evil, And his lips from speaking deceit. Let him turn away from evil and do good; Let him seek peace and pursue it.” | For: “If anyone wishes to love life and to experience good days, he must restrain his tongue from evil and his lips from deceitful speech. He must turn away from evil and do good, seek peace and pursue it.” |
