For unto us a child is born (3/4)

  • Listen, my son, and take my words to heart,
    and the years of your life will be multiplied.
  • Rend your hearts and not your garments,
    and turn back to the Lord, your God.
    For he is gracious and merciful,
    slow to anger, rich in kindness,
    and always prepared to relent from punishing.
  • For the Lord is our judge,
    the Lord is our lawgiver.
    The Lord is our king;
    he is the one who will save us.
  • My son, do not ignore the Lord’s discipline
    or refuse to accept his rebuke.
    For the Lord disciplines those whom he loves,
    just as a father chastises a beloved son.
  • Until a spirit from on high
    is poured out upon us,
    and the wilderness becomes an orchard
    and the fruitful field becomes a forest.
  • Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, it will be enough for us.”
  • But God is rich in his mercy, and because he had such great love for us, he brought us to life with Christ when we were already dead through sin—it is by grace that you have been saved.
  • Jesus replied,
    “Amen, amen, I say to you,
    everyone who sins
    is a slave of sin.”
  • For one believes in the heart and so is justified, and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved.
  • Therefore, we fasted and prayed to God to grant us a safe journey, and he answered our prayer.
  • Before the mountains were brought forth
    or the earth and the world came into existence,
    from everlasting to everlasting you are God.
  • Indeed, it is seldom that anyone will die for a just person, although perhaps for a good person someone might be willing to die. Thus, God proved his love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us.
  • The Lord commanded us to observe all of these statutes and to fear the Lord, our God, so that we might always prosper and be kept alive, even as we are today.
  • He gave himself for us in order to deliver us from all iniquity and to purify for himself a people as his own who are eager to do good.
  • For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for a life of good works that God had prepared for us to do.
  • You shall not oppress the widow or the orphan. If you mistreat them and they cry out to me for help, I will surely hear their cry, and my fury will burn and I will put you to death by the sword. Your wives will be widows and your children will be orphans.
  • I then heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?” I said, “Here I am. Send me!”
  • May the Lord, our God, be with us, just as he was with our fathers; may he not leave us or abandon us.
  • As far as the east is from the west,
    so far has he removed our transgressions from us.
  • My son, concentrate attentively on my words;
    pay heed to the instructions I pass on to you.
    Do not let them slip from your mind;
    keep them forever in your heart.
  • Indeed, the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
  • My son, do not forget my teaching,
    but cherish my commandments in your heart,
    for they will bring you length of days,
    more years of life, and an abundance of prosperity.
  • However, God has revealed these things to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit explores everything, even the depths of God.
  • May the favor of the Lord, our God, rest upon us.
    And may the work of our hands prosper—
    indeed, may the work of our hands prosper.
  • Your word is a lamp for my feet
    and a light to my path.

And do not lead us into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.
