Giving to the needy (3/4)

  • They devoted themselves to the teaching of the apostles and to the communal fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayers.
  • Therefore, whenever you give alms, do not trumpet your generosity, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets in order to win the praise of others. Amen, I say to you, they have already received their reward.
  • Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace but a sword.
  • “But you,” he said to them, “who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
  • And we are witnesses to these things, as is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey him.
  • The wealthy man lords it over the poor,
    and the borrower becomes the slave of the lender.
  • I have made your name known to them,
    and I will make it known,
    so that the love with which you loved me
    may be in them, and I in them.
  • May the Lord guide your hearts to the love of God and the steadfastness of Christ.
  • In my distress I called out to the Lord;
    he answered by setting me free.
  • Then he took a cup, and after offering thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from this, all of you. For this is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed on behalf of many for the forgiveness of sins.”
  • May I never boast of anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world is crucified to me and I to the world.
  • Prepare in advance what you want to say,
    and return to the Lord.
    Say to him, “Take away all guilt
    and give us what is good,
    so that we may present as offerings
    the bullocks from our stalls.”
  • I urge you, brethren, to watch out for those who incite dissensions and obstacles in opposition to the teaching that you have learned. Take care to avoid them.
  • When anyone turns a deaf ear to the law,
    even his prayer is detestable.
  • Commit your way to the Lord;
    place your trust in him, and he will act.
    He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn,
    and the justice of your cause, like the noonday.
  • Wives, be subject to your husbands as you are to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, just as Christ is the head of the Church, the body of which he is the Savior.
  • The crowds that preceded him and those that followed kept shouting:
    “Hosanna to the Son of David!
    Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!
    Hosanna in the highest!”
  • Let everything that breathes
    offer praise to the Lord.
    Alleluia.
  • Do not envy a violent man
    or choose to emulate any of his ways.
    For the perverse man is an abomination to the Lord
    whose friendship is bestowed only upon the upright.
  • As for me, I trust in your kindness;
    my heart rejoices in your salvation.
    I will sing to the Lord
    because he has been good to me.
  • Let the wicked abandon their ways
    and those who are evil their thoughts.
    Let them return to the Lord
    so that he may have mercy upon them;
    and to our God,
    for he is rich in forgiveness.
  • Then I acknowledged my sin to you,
    and I made no attempt to conceal my guilt.
    I said, “I will confess my offenses to the Lord,”
    and you removed the guilt of my sin. Selah
  • The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
    because he has anointed me
    to bring the good news to the poor.
    He has sent me to proclaim release to prisoners
    and recovery of sight to the blind,
    to let the oppressed go free.
  • To the loyal, you show yourself to be loyal;
    to the blameless, you show yourself to be blameless.
  • Rend your hearts and not your garments,
    and turn back to the Lord, your God.
    For he is gracious and merciful,
    slow to anger, rich in kindness,
    and always prepared to relent from punishing.

Let everyone submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which derives from God, and whatever authorities exist have been instituted by God.

Bible verse of the day

For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so too do we believe that God will bring forth with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.
