My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth. | Little children, let us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action. |
Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good. | Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good. |
|
And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself. | He answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.” |
Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise. | Do not deceive yourselves. If you think that you are wise in this age, you should become fools so that you may become wise. |
Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart: So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man. | Do not let loyalty and faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. So you will find favor and good repute in the sight of God and of people. |
If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet. | So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. |
Let no man seek his own, but every man another's wealth. | Do not seek your own advantage, but that of the other. |
Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. | He said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ |
Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord. | Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord! |
In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. | On the last day of the festival, the great day, while Jesus was standing there, he cried out, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me.” |
Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) | Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful. |
Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth: for God hath received him. | Those who eat must not despise those who abstain, and those who abstain must not pass judgment on those who eat; for God has welcomed them. |
And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. | Then God said, “Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.” |
And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the Lord your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil. | Rend your hearts and not your clothing. Return to the Lord, your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love, and relents from punishing. |
Teach me thy way, O Lord; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name. | Teach me your way, O Lord, that I may walk in your truth; give me an undivided heart to revere your name. |
Shew me thy ways, O Lord; teach me thy paths. | Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths. |
Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful. | Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. |
Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. | Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. |
Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. | Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. |
Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband. | But because of cases of sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband. |
Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom. | Who is wise and understanding among you? Show by your good life that your works are done with gentleness born of wisdom. |
Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer. | Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer. |
He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. | He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber. |
For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. | For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. |
Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us. | Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us. |
