The heart is deceitful above all things and it is exceedingly corrupt. Who can know it? “I, Yahweh, search the mind. I try the heart, even to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings.” | The heart is devious above all else; it is perverse— who can understand it? I the Lord test the mind and search the heart, to give to all according to their ways, according to the fruit of their doings. |
A fool vents all of his anger, but a wise man brings himself under control. | A fool gives full vent to anger, but the wise quietly holds it back. |
A man’s heart plans his course, but Yahweh directs his steps. | The human mind plans the way, but the Lord directs the steps. |
It is an honor for a man to keep aloof from strife, but every fool will be quarreling. | It is honorable to refrain from strife, but every fool is quick to quarrel. |
If a man says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who doesn’t love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen? | Those who say, “I love God,” and hate their brothers or sisters, are liars; for those who do not love a brother or sister whom they have seen, cannot love God whom they have not seen. |
