10 Bible Verses about Fasting - NIV & ESV


“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen:
to loose the chains of injustice
and untie the cords of the yoke,
to set the oppressed free
and break every yoke?”
“Is not this the fast that I choose:
to loose the bonds of wickedness,
to undo the straps of the yoke,
to let the oppressed go free,
and to break every yoke?”
So we fasted and petitioned our God about this, and he answered our prayer.So we fasted and implored our God for this, and he listened to our entreaty.
When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.
But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
“Even now,” declares the Lord,
“return to me with all your heart,
with fasting and weeping and mourning.”
“Yet even now,” declares the Lord,
“return to me with all your heart,
with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning”
So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off.Then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off.
I ate no choice food; no meat or wine touched my lips; and I used no lotions at all until the three weeks were over.I ate no delicacies, no meat or wine entered my mouth, nor did I anoint myself at all, for the full three weeks.
