Now godliness with contentment is great gain. | Godliness produces great gain, but only to those who are content. |
For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain. | For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. |

So teach us to number our days, That we may gain a heart of wisdom. | Teach us to comprehend how few our days are so that our hearts may be filled with wisdom. |
For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? | What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his very life? |
Incline my heart to Your testimonies, And not to covetousness. | Dispose my heart to follow your statutes and to flee selfish gain. |
For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? | What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his very life? Or what can he give in exchange for his life? |
Happy is the man who finds wisdom, And the man who gains understanding. | Blessed is the person who has found wisdom, the one who has gained understanding. |
And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing. | If I give away everything to feed the poor and hand over my body to be burned, but do not have love, I achieve nothing. |
For they did not gain possession of the land by their own sword, Nor did their own arm save them; But it was Your right hand, Your arm, and the light of Your countenance, Because You favored them. | It was not their own swords that won them the land, nor did their own arms make them victorious; rather, it was your right hand and your arm and the light of your face, because you loved them. |
He who loves silver will not be satisfied with silver; Nor he who loves abundance, with increase. This also is vanity. | One who is covetous will never be satisfied with money, nor will the lover of wealth be content with gain. This too is vanity. |
A man’s pride will bring him low, But the humble in spirit will retain honor. | A man’s pride will bring him low, but lowly souls will rise to honor. |
Better is a little with righteousness, Than vast revenues without justice. | It is better to have little and be righteous than to acquire great riches with injustice. |
Wealth gained by dishonesty will be diminished, But he who gathers by labor will increase. | Wealth hastily acquired will dwindle away, but when amassed little by little, it will increase. |
Get wisdom! Get understanding! Do not forget, nor turn away from the words of my mouth. | Acquire wisdom and gain understanding; never forget or turn aside from my words. |
The wicked man does deceptive work, But he who sows righteousness will have a sure reward. | The labors of the wicked man produce little profit, but the one who sows righteousness reaps a sure reward. |
Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother. | If your brother wrongs you, go and take up the matter with him when the two of you are alone. If he listens to you, you have won your brother over. |
When goods increase, They increase who eat them; So what profit have the owners Except to see them with their eyes? | When riches increase, so do those who are eager to accumulate them, and those who have accumulated them must remain content simply to feast their eyes on them. |
Let not mercy and truth forsake you; Bind them around your neck, Write them on the tablet of your heart, And so find favor and high esteem In the sight of God and man. | Do not let kindness and fidelity leave you; fasten them around your neck and inscribe them on the tablet of your heart. Then you will gain favor and a good name in the sight of God and man. |
For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ. | Does it now appear to you that I am trying to gain the approval of human beings rather than the approval of God? Am I seeking to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ. |
And I will make your descendants multiply as the stars of heaven; I will give to your descendants all these lands; and in your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed; because Abraham obeyed My voice and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and My laws. | I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars of the heavens and I will give them all these lands. All the nations on the earth will be blessed through your descendants, for Abraham listened to my voice and observed that which I ordered: my commandments, my ordinances and my laws. |
