| A rich person’s wealth is his strong city, And like a high wall in his own imagination. | The rich think of their wealth as a strong defense; they imagine it to be a high wall of safety. |
| Like a city that is broken into and without walls So is a person who has no self-control over his spirit. | A person without self-control is like a city with broken-down walls. |
| He has told you, mortal one, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you But to do justice, to love kindness, And to walk humbly with your God? | No, O people, the Lord has told you what is good, and this is what he requires of you: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God. |
| The wicked borrows and does not pay back, But the righteous is gracious and gives. | The wicked borrow and never repay, but the godly are generous givers. |
| All day long he is craving, While the righteous gives and does not hold back. | Some people are always greedy for more, but the godly love to give! |
| With the faithful You show Yourself faithful; With the blameless You prove Yourself blameless. | To the faithful you show yourself faithful; to those with integrity you show integrity. |
| A person of too many friends comes to ruin, But there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. | There are “friends” who destroy each other, but a real friend sticks closer than a brother. |
| Nevertheless, as for you individually, each husband is to love his own wife the same as himself, and the wife must see to it that she respects her husband. | So again I say, each man must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband. |
| Do not envy a violent person, And do not choose any of his ways. For the devious are an abomination to the Lord; But He is intimate with the upright. | Don’t envy violent people or copy their ways. Such wicked people are detestable to the Lord, but he offers his friendship to the godly. |
| Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, And whose trust is the Lord. For he will be like a tree planted by the water That extends its roots by a stream, And does not fear when the heat comes; But its leaves will be green, And it will not be anxious in a year of drought, Nor cease to yield fruit. | But blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence. They are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water. Such trees are not bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought. Their leaves stay green, and they never stop producing fruit. |
