| So if someone tells you, ‘Look, the Messiah is out in the desert,’ don’t bother to go and look. Or, ‘Look, he is hiding here,’ don’t believe it! For as the lightning flashes in the east and shines to the west, so it will be when the Son of Man comes. | So, if they say to you, ‘Look! He is in the wilderness,’ do not go out. If they say, ‘Look! He is in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. |
| Brothers, listen! We are here to proclaim that through this man Jesus there is forgiveness for your sins. Everyone who believes in him is made right in God’s sight—something the law of Moses could never do. | Let it be known to you therefore, my brothers, that through this man forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you; by this Jesus everyone who believes is set free from all those sins from which you could not be freed by the law of Moses. |

| Loyalty makes a person attractive. It is better to be poor than dishonest. | What is desirable in a person is loyalty, and it is better to be poor than a liar. |
| As a face is reflected in water, so the heart reflects the real person. | Just as water reflects the face, so one human heart reflects another. |
| Joyful is the person who finds wisdom, the one who gains understanding. | Happy are those who find wisdom, and those who get understanding. |
| In my desperation I prayed, and the Lord listened; he saved me from all my troubles. | This poor soul cried, and was heard by the Lord, and was saved from every trouble. |
| As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend. | Iron sharpens iron, and one person sharpens the wits of another. |
| Fearing people is a dangerous trap, but trusting the Lord means safety. | The fear of others lays a snare, but one who trusts in the Lord is secure. |
| And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul? | For what will it profit them if they gain the whole world but forfeit their life? Or what will they give in return for their life? |
| One Sabbath day as Jesus was walking through some grainfields, his disciples began breaking off heads of grain to eat. But the Pharisees said to Jesus, “Look, why are they breaking the law by harvesting grain on the Sabbath?” Jesus said to them, “Haven’t you ever read in the Scriptures what David did when he and his companions were hungry? He went into the house of God (during the days when Abiathar was high priest) and broke the law by eating the sacred loaves of bread that only the priests are allowed to eat. He also gave some to his companions.” Then Jesus said to them, “The Sabbath was made to meet the needs of people, and not people to meet the requirements of the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord, even over the Sabbath!” | One sabbath he was going through the grainfields; and as they made their way his disciples began to pluck heads of grain. The Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the sabbath?” And he said to them, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need of food? He entered the house of God, when Abiathar was high priest, and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and he gave some to his companions.” Then he said to them, “The sabbath was made for humankind, and not humankind for the sabbath; so the Son of Man is lord even of the sabbath.” |
| A troublemaker plants seeds of strife; gossip separates the best of friends. | A perverse person spreads strife, and a whisperer separates close friends. |
| A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from what is in your heart. | The good person out of the good treasure of the heart produces good, and the evil person out of evil treasure produces evil; for it is out of the abundance of the heart that the mouth speaks. |
| Fools vent their anger, but the wise quietly hold it back. | A fool gives full vent to anger, but the wise quietly holds it back. |
| How can a young person stay pure? By obeying your word. | How can young people keep their way pure? By guarding it according to your word. |
| And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? | For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? |
| Don’t be misled—you cannot mock the justice of God. You will always harvest what you plant. | Do not be deceived; God is not mocked, for you reap whatever you sow. |
| And the Lord God made clothing from animal skins for Adam and his wife. | And the Lord God made garments of skins for the man and for his wife, and clothed them. |
| Taste and see that the Lord is good. Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in him! | O taste and see that the Lord is good; happy are those who take refuge in him. |
| There is a path before each person that seems right, but it ends in death. | There is a way that seems right to a person, but its end is the way to death. |
