| When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they will not overflow you. | So then, let’s not sleep as others do, but let’s be alert and sober. | So be on your guard, not asleep like the others. Stay alert and be clearheaded. |
| Not lagging behind in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord. | Never be lazy, but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically. |
| Little children, let’s not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth. | Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions. |
| The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not willing for any to perish, but for all to come to repentance. | The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent. |
| “If you do not listen, and if you do not take it to heart to give honor to My name,” says the Lord of armies, “then I will send the curse upon you and I will curse your blessings; and indeed, I have cursed them already, because you are not taking it to heart.” | “Listen to me and make up your minds to honor my name,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, “or I will bring a terrible curse against you. I will curse even the blessings you receive. Indeed, I have already cursed them, because you have not taken my warning to heart.” |
| “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord. | “My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.” |
| But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not just hearers who deceive themselves. | But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. |

For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever. |
| Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me. | Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me. |
| Be of the same mind toward one another; do not be haughty in mind, but associate with the lowly. Do not be wise in your own estimation. | Live in harmony with each other. Don’t be too proud to enjoy the company of ordinary people. And don’t think you know it all! |
| Or can a person walk on hot coals And his feet not be scorched? | Can he walk on hot coals and not blister his feet? |
