| The heart is more deceitful than any other thing, and it is also perverse. Who can uncover its secrets? I, the Lord, search the heart and probe the mind to reward all according to their conduct and as their deeds deserve. | The heart is more deceitful than all else And is desperately sick; Who can understand it? | A fool gives free rein to his anger, but a wise man bides his time and calms it. | A fool always loses his temper, But a wise person holds it back. |
| A man may plan his own course, but the Lord makes his steps secure. | The mind of a person plans his way, But the Lord directs his steps. |
| It is honorable to avoid strife, but every fool is quarrelsome. | Avoiding strife is an honor for a person, But any fool will quarrel. |
| If someone says, “I love God,” but at the same time hates his brother, he is a liar. For whoever does not love the brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. | If someone says, “I love God,” and yet he hates his brother or sister, he is a liar; for the one who does not love his brother and sister whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen. |
| What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his very life? | For what does it benefit a person to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul? |
| And where a single man can be overcome, two together will be able to resist. A cord with three strands is not easily broken. | And if one can overpower him who is alone, two can resist him. A cord of three strands is not quickly torn apart. |
| Truly, you bless the righteous, O Lord; you surround them with your goodwill as with a shield. | For You bless the righteous person, Lord, You surround him with favor as with a shield. |
| But he is to ask with faith, without doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed about by the wind. | But he must ask in faith without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind. |
| A man is haughty until disaster overtakes him, but humility comes before honors. | Before destruction the heart of a person is haughty, But humility goes before honor. |
| No one can have greater love than to lay down his life for his friends. | Greater love has no one than this, that a person will lay down his life for his friends. |
| In it the righteousness of God is revealed, beginning in faith and established in faith. As it is written: “The one who is righteous will live through faith.” | For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written: “But the righteous one will live by faith.” |
| The future bodes well for him who is generous in helping those in need and who conducts his affairs with justice. | It goes well for a person who is gracious and lends; He will maintain his cause in judgment. |
| Anyone who is victorious will be dressed like these in white robes, and I shall not blot his name from the book of life. | Blessed is the man whom God reproves. Therefore, do not reject the discipline of the Almighty. | Behold, happy is the person whom God disciplines, So do not reject the discipline of the Almighty. |
| The words of a wise man win favor, but a fool’s tongue is his undoing. | Words from the mouth of a wise person are gracious, while the lips of a fool consume him. |
| Alleluia. Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who greatly delights in his precepts. | Praise the Lord! Blessed is a person who fears the Lord, Who greatly delights in His commandments. |
