Why do bad things happen (2/4)

  • Then Peter asked, “Ananias, why has Satan so gained control of your heart that you lied to the Holy Spirit and retained part of the sale price of the land? While it remained unsold, did it not belong to you? And after it was sold, were not the proceeds yours? What caused you to contrive this scheme? You have lied not to men but to God.”
  • And we are witnesses to these things, as is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey him.
  • Through him all things came into existence,
and without him there was nothing.
    That which came to be.
  • I have told you these things
so that my joy may be in you
and your joy may be complete.
  • The end of all things is near. Therefore, lead disciplined lives and be watchful in prayer.
  • For our eyes are fixed not on what is seen but rather on that which cannot be seen. What is visible is transitory; what is invisible is eternal.
  • Jesus looked at them and said, “For men this is impossible, but for God all things are possible.”
  • Rather, seek the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
  • Only fear the Lord and serve him faithfully with your whole heart, considering the great things he has done for you.
  • That is why you also pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, and they devote themselves to this service.
  • Jesus looked at them and said, “For men it is impossible, but not for God. For God all things are possible.”
  • O Lord, you are my God.
I will exalt you and praise your name,
for you have accomplished wonderful things,
formulated in ages past, faithful and sure.
  • But who am I, and what are your people,
that we should be able to do this?
    All things belong to you,
and everything that we have given you is from your hand.
  • What then can we say in response to all this? If God is for us, who can be against us?
  • Jesus answered them, “Amen, I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only will you do what has been done to this fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ it will be accomplished.”
  • Abba, Father, for you all things are possible. Take this cup from me. Yet not my will but yours be done.
  • We know that God makes all things work together for good for those who love him and who are called according to his purpose.
  • The one who calls you is faithful, and he will accomplish this.
  • Therefore, you have no excuse, whoever you may be, when you pass judgment on others. For in judging others you condemn yourself, since you are doing the same things.
  • I write these things to you
who believe in the name of the Son of God
    so that you may know
    that you have eternal life.
  • Call to me and I will answer you and reveal to you great and mysterious secrets about which you are unaware.
  • The one who gives this testimony says, “Yes, I am coming soon.”
    Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!
  • Finally, brethren, let your minds be filled with whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, whatever is excellent, whatever is worthy of praise.
  • For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor present things, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
  • He reveals deep and hidden mysteries
and knows what lies in the darkness,
    for light dwells with him.

One day, as Jesus was passing through a field of grain on the Sabbath, his disciples began to pick some heads of grain as they walked along. The Pharisees said to him, “Behold, why are your disciples doing what is forbidden on the Sabbath?”

He answered, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need of food? He entered the house of God when Abiathar was high priest and ate the sacred bread that only the priests were permitted to eat, and he shared it with his companions.” Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. That is why the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”
