- Like a city breached, without walls,
is one who lacks self-control. - For this very reason, you must make every effort to support your faith with goodness, and goodness with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with endurance, and endurance with godliness, and godliness with mutual affection, and mutual affection with love.
- By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things.
- Athletes exercise self-control in all things; they do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable one.
- Do not deprive one another except perhaps by agreement for a set time, to devote yourselves to prayer, and then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.
- For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but rather a spirit of power and of love and of self-discipline.
- One who is slow to anger is better than the mighty,
and one whose temper is controlled than one who captures a city. - Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have stripped off the old self with its practices and have clothed yourselves with the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge according to the image of its creator.
- For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from fornication;
that each one of you know how to control your own body in holiness and honor,
not with lustful passion, like the Gentiles who do not know God. - For all of us make many mistakes. Anyone who makes no mistakes in speaking is perfect, able to keep the whole body in check with a bridle.
- So we do not lose heart. Even though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day.
- For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all, training us to renounce impiety and worldly passions, and in the present age to live lives that are self-controlled, upright, and godly.
- But I punish my body and enslave it, so that after proclaiming to others I myself should not be disqualified.
- To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.
- Therefore prepare your minds for action; discipline yourselves; set all your hope on the grace that Jesus Christ will bring you when he is revealed.
- For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin.
- Do not adorn yourselves outwardly by braiding your hair, and by wearing gold ornaments or fine clothing; rather, let your adornment be the inner self with the lasting beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in God's sight.
- A fool gives full vent to anger,
but the wise quietly holds it back. - For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for self-indulgence, but through love become slaves to one another.
- Whoever is slow to anger has great understanding,
but one who has a hasty temper exalts folly. - The end of all things is near; therefore be serious and discipline yourselves for the sake of your prayers.
- Also that the women should dress themselves modestly and decently in suitable clothing, not with their hair braided, or with gold, pearls, or expensive clothes, but with good works, as is proper for women who profess reverence for God.
- And those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
- Those who guard their mouths preserve their lives;
those who open wide their lips come to ruin. - If any think they are religious, and do not bridle their tongues but deceive their hearts, their religion is worthless.
Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and do not make room for the devil.And may the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all, just as we abound in love for you.
