Bible Verses about Self-control
Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control. | He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls. |
For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline. | For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. |
For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. | And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. |
Better a patient person than a warrior, one with self-control than one who takes a city. | He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city. |
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. | But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. |
My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry. | Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath. |
The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit. | Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof. |
No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. | There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. |
So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober. | Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober. |
Fools show their annoyance at once, but the prudent overlook an insult. | A fool's wrath is presently known: but a prudent man covereth shame. |
Fools give full vent to their rage, but the wise bring calm in the end. | A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise man keepeth it in till afterwards. |
For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age. | For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world. |
No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize. | But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway. |
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. | And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. |
Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. | And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. |
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. | For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. |
Do not turn to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil. | Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil. |
Watch out that you do not lose what we have worked for, but that you may be rewarded fully. | Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward. |
I made a covenant with my eyes not to look lustfully at a young woman. | I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid? |
Do not deprive each other except perhaps by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. | Defraud ye not one the other, except it be with consent for a time, that ye may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again, that Satan tempt you not for your incontinency. |
It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control your own body in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate lust like the pagans, who do not know God. | For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication: That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour; Not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God. |
