- Defend the weak and the fatherless;
uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed. - A person finds joy in giving an apt reply—
and how good is a timely word! - Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
- Accept the one whose faith is weak, without quarreling over disputable matters.
- Start children off on the way they should go,
and even when they are old they will not turn from it. - Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.
- All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
- We ought always to thank God for you, brothers and sisters, and rightly so, because your faith is growing more and more, and the love all of you have for one another is increasing.
- For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous
and his ears are attentive to their prayer,
but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil. - When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone.
- Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good?
- Let the wicked forsake their ways
and the unrighteous their thoughts.
Let them turn to the Lord, and he will have mercy on them,
and to our God, for he will freely pardon. - Better a little with righteousness
than much gain with injustice. - He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.
And what does the Lord require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly with your God. - Seek the Lord, all you humble of the land,
you who do what he commands.
Seek righteousness, seek humility;
perhaps you will be sheltered
on the day of the Lord’s anger. - See, the enemy is puffed up;
his desires are not upright—
but the righteous person will live by his faithfulness. - But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.
- What shall we say, then? Is the law sinful? Certainly not! Nevertheless, I would not have known what sin was had it not been for the law. For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.”
- Woe to those who quarrel with their Maker,
those who are nothing but potsherds
among the potsherds on the ground.
Does the clay say to the potter,
‘What are you making?’
Does your work say,
‘The potter has no hands’? - And I saw that all toil and all achievement spring from one person’s envy of another. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.
- And if we are careful to obey all this law before the Lord our God, as he has commanded us, that will be our righteousness.
- But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.
- Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted.
- Show me your ways, Lord,
teach me your paths. - Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be.
